My little canon elph takes pretty good pics. Even has an "underwater" setting. I bought the waterproof housing for it too.

An old Nikon CoolPix 885. Also have the Canon Rebel XT but need to get a macro lense. The camera is kinda worthless for close up tank shots without one.

I use a Rebel XT.

Kenny, pick up a Kenko extension tube (or a set). They will turn any lens into a macro for much less $. You can still use AF (though I wouldn't with a tube) and don't lose stops. Of course a true prime macro lens would be best, but for a cost effective macro alternative extension tubes work great. =D

Which model do you have? My wife is looking for a new elph.
Mine's old. The SD400 I think. From what I've seen, the new ones don't have the underwater setting?? Or at least you need to go through a more complicated menu to get to it...more time than I was willing to spend while messing around in Best Buy :D

I borrowed a Rebel for a week. Couldn't get a decent pic of my tank to save my life LOL....

Ed, I've looked at different options but have decided to wait and get a true macro later on.
I'm on the same page. Been going back and forth on the tubes and am just about to purchase a 105mm f2.8 macro :top:

Rich, some basic camera knowledge beforehand will go a long way in helping take tank shots (which somehow fall into a photo category all to themselves). Do a little practicing with different F stop, aperture and ISO combinations, also play with WB and exposure controls a little, to get a feel for what the different settings actually do. I think there is a tank photography forum at RC that might be helpful to you as well. :)

I'm using the Canon 40D(early Christmas.) For lenses I'm using my 15+ year old lenses and extension tube. For any close up pics use a tripod, go with a smaller aperature for a greater depth of field but don't shoot too slow you can freeze the pollyps. Then cheat and use some free software like IrfanView and magnify/crop a small portion.
here is my poorman's macro pic
