What’s even worst is a tank full of corals that has been hacked half to death…. Back when sps were the ‘in’ coral there were a few guys out there and I’m not naming names but all they had were stumps of what use to be a nice colony. One of the best decisions I made when I had my old tank was to stop frag any corals unless I absolutely had to. I p’ed a few friends off when I turned there frag request down but the tank looked more mature just a few months later.

Depending on the genre of coral you want, Hard coral id go with a watermelon chalice, Lps id go with some kind of aussie lord acan, Sps a karl's candlelight acropora.

I totally agree with the "something large" comment, I've seen so many expensive setups that are littered with square and round plugs with tiny corals on them that just look goofy, like 240g $2000 wet trashcans from a distance. If you are just starting that is understandable but at some point you need to let things grow naturally.

Any staghorn shaped acro.

Nothing says "reef", at least to me, like a branching staghorn of some sort. A formosa, or insignis. Maybe a surf n turf for both shape and color.
