Doing a little maintenance on my tank and I noticed one of the rocks in the sump has a thick jelly/mucus like substance growing on a layer on the top of the rock.

At first in the sump it kinda looked reddish but when I pulled it out it looked almost green. When I set the rock back into the sump the layer floated off the rock and I grabbed it and pulled it out. It now looks almost like a dark purple /greenish color.

I know its hard without pictures but is this something I need to be worried about?

Sounds like cyanobacteria. Aka blue green algae. Not something good but lots of things you can do to make it go bye bye. Google & read up on it...
