Ok So I don't see any visible scars or any parisites on the fish but its tummy is getting awfully big and its breathing really hard. Only thing I can think of is this little fisshy got knocked up somehow. BUT THERE ARE NO OTHER lawnmowers in the vicnity(tank)?! WTH is going on?! What do you think is happeneing?

1. Mine's a pig and has a belly almost that big.
2. If it's a female, there doesn't have to be a male for it to produce eggs, just need a male to fertilize them.

Maybe it's constipated

Ben, I'm afraid it's bad news... When I first got my tank I had no idea wth I was doing & made many mistakes. I had a terrible ich outbreak & decided to qt all fish in copper treatment & let dt run fallow for 8 weeks to ensure the ich was eradicated. During this time my lawnmower blenny bloated up just like you're describing. I did a lot of reading & found that eating a diet too rich in protein is detrimental to their health & has this affect on their bellies. Because of being in qt with copper, there wasn't any algae for him to eat. He ate the food that I fed my other fish very well, but it wasn't healthy for him. I tried the dried nori on the clip as well as rubber banded to a rock, but only my tangs & foxface would eat it. I even got some pellets called seaweed extreme, but even though the protein content was less, it was still 30%. He survived like this for several weeks but effectually he started having swim bladder problems & after a few days of swimming while involuntarily doing summersaults & flips, he died. :(
Do you think yours gets a good diet of greens?

Wow never even thought about its diet. Lindsey, how long did it have a swollen bladder before it went crazy and died?

Ben, how long has its belly been like that?

You'd make a lousy doctor. "No, I haven't seen you, or ran any tests, but by what you describe, you're going to die..." ;)

Mine was like that for weeks. It definitely looked pregnant! The last week or so, iirc, it stopped eating.

I'm actually a fantastic diagnostician :D

Lawnmower blennies don't seem to fair well in captivity from all I've read. I had one back in the day and he was fine 6 months but then slowly wasted away. Sorry not much help Ben just what I've read and found myself. Lindsey is right they need the greens... sometimes they won't even eat any prepared foods they just forage for algae and end up not eating enough from the aquarium to sustain them.
