I find it very funny and a bit irritating when peple call their 5 polyp this or 3 inch stick a colony. I feel a colony should be something that makes me say "Wow that thing is huge". Just want to find out what others think.

girls say my colony is huge.

but for real. i think a colony is anything that can make multiple mini colonies . Mini colonies vary on type and cost. For example birdnest mini colony is gonna have to be much bigger IMO than a reef raft sps mini colony. Zoas a mini colony would be 5+ adult zoas for expensive stuff

Well I learned something recently. a 3 inch purple monster is a colony because it will take you quite sometimes to grow .5 inch frag to a 3 inch "colony" .Gumbi told me some PPE zoas grow 1 polyp a year, so yeah 5 polyp is a "Wow that thing is huge" colony right :)???
However, a colony of 30 cherry charms or eagle eyes is still a frag because people are giving those frags away left and right and not many people sign up for them :)

a community of one kind living close together or forming a physically connected structure <<<<<google says 2 polyps/branches/heads/etc is a colony I guess lol

I feel like:

Polyps:
1 through 8 or 10 = frag
10-20 = mini colony
21+ = colony

Acans, Favia, favites, blastos etc:
1 through 6 or 8 = frag
8-15 = mini colony
15+ = colony

Torch/hammer/frog etc:
1-2 = frag
3-6 = mini colony
6+ = colony

SPS:
ALL Single branch, and up to 2" = Frag
2-3" = mini colony
3"+ = colony

of course this is just an opinion and an average I have developed thru experience, and a little over a decade in the hobby. But I have seen people call 3 polyps a colony hahaha or a 1.5" red dragon a colony

a group of people who leave their native country to form in a new land a settlement subject to, or connected with, the parent nation.

Lol. Jk.

I myself consider a colony 30-40+. Anything 25 and under is definitely a big or full frag to me. If you consider 20 polyps a colony you probably also consider music and 20 people a club.

ooh for reefing? stuck on a jagged piece of LR, costs more $$$ than a large frag

Colony to me is soft ball size for SPS. It don't like to see tiny little frags people sell for two reasons:

1. The survival rate of tiny frags is lower than good size frags.
2. It will take much longer for a tiny frag to take off and grow into something nice.

I think the minimum size for a frag should be 2" inches with few exceptions. SPS like Oregon tort for example 2" frag is over a year of growth, and also surprisingly hardy in my experience.

Cheers!
