Back in this freaking hobby after a 10 year lay off. Kids mostly hounding me and even my friends.
About to do the first upgrade into a modest 100 gallon.
Where do you guys buy supplies from. Marine depot and BRS was my go to’s and Tongs and some other LFS’s but I’m f’d up from an accident so I’m not as beastly as I once was to go in person to get reef crap.

In person I like going to Ellis Aquatics in Compton, best shop in the area. Online I usually shop at BRS.

Just got back into last year also after a lay off of several years. I've been using BRS and Amazon but try to support LFS when I can.

Will reach out to the LFs I would frequent. They have to make their dough as well. Part of the way to stay afloat.

I usually go this route for reefing hardware:

  1. Decide only on what you actually need before you buy -- don't get sucked into brand trends, or fancy looking threads. I've been guilty of this because I wouldn't just spend the time to plan for what I actually need and find the most cost effective solution. An IceCap 1K Gyre was a better deal for me than a more expensive Maxspect gyre and after two years of it running I'm more in love with its controller than I am with the Maxspect I saw at Reefapalooza.

  2. Do a WTB post on a R2R or Socalireefs as well as look for used deals -- sometimes you get lucky and a distributor rep is lurking or actually selling something new at a deep discount (rare) but it's happened to me a few times.

  3. LFS -- they'll order anything for you so you save on shipping, plus, you build a good relationship with someone local

  4. Open Box buys on BRS, Premium Aquatics and Saltwater Aquarium -- sometimes the deals are super good.

  5. Then I look on Amazon and Ebay -- but I usually end up going back to one of the major online retailers because customer service definitely is important for certain hardware. If you're buying a Jebao then you've got the luxury of buying rock bottom pricing and amazon is usually a great deal for these brands.

  6. Then I'll hit back at BRS, Aquacave, Saltwateraquarium, and Premium Aquatics for specific hardware and I know these guys will replace or reship if there's an issue.

I mostly use premium aquatics for an online vendor.

dry goods, I like age of aquarium in signal hill. You don’t even need to ask them to match online, it’s usually already the same price.
