I think I have narrowed it down to either the Sony rx100 mark IV or the Nikon Coolpix p900? All I need is sharp clear pictures and good video resolution when I record my fast moving fishies. What you say SCR? Also hoping oredith will chime in and help contribute to the conversation.:wavey:

Canon also get my vote...the 70d is a nice to pick up and put on a decent 17-70mm f2.8 Sigma macro OS glass at a good price for $350 on Amazon you will get some serious nice coral photography, brotha.

Is an SLR an option? Size matter?
Camera will only be for fish and corals since I don't have kids or other hobbies where I can use a camera and last time I checked taking a camera to play cards at commerce, was prohibited...lol....but still interested in your recommendation

Thnks....Researching now. So the macro lense is $350 plus another $800 for the camera body? Sound about right?

For fish, you can get by with pretty much any lens. For corals, a good macro lens is needed. I'm not saying you can't take good pictures of corals with any lens but to get up close, most macro lens have a very short minimum focus distance. I think most stock lens are about 1m where a macro lens is 4 or 5 inches. I personally went with Canon because a couple of buddies have canon and I was able to borrow lenses to play with and see if I liked. With Point and Shoot cameras, you're kind of stuck with what's on there and none have true macro lenses.

honestly, i haven't kept up with those models. primarily only keep up with DSLRs..

between those 2 though, i'd go with the Sony. they have been doing really well with the "point and click" types (even though this is obviously a lot more than that).

one big draw for the sony is the form factor. as the saying goes, "the best camera is the one you have with you". I have a bunch of fancy DSLR / lenses, but they're big and bulky, and don't make it with me on a lot of occasions for various reasons.

i've thought about selling either my 5Dm2, or my 7D and getting a Canon Powershot G5x

oh, also, for good marco shots of corals, a good tripod is needed. It's hard to get good macro shots by holding the camera. A shutter remote is also a nice thing to have.

I have an older Sony nex 7, but if I had to do it over again, I'd go with canon and the 100mm canon macro lens or Tamron 90 mm macro lens. They are big cameras but if you want close-up macro.....

It's just like if someone asks you... what's the best lighting. lol.... So many answers to that question. What's the budget?
