Keep in mind I'm a total newbie when it comes to cameras, so if you can specify why this one is better than that one per se. Well here are the combatants. In this corner we got the Olympus SP-820UZ, in the other corner we have the Nikon Coolpix P510. Thanks in advance guys.

It's not a budget. It's actually one of the perks of traveling for work, I've accumulated a good amount of miles. I also saw a Canon Eos Rebel T3 & T3i. Would this one be better?

Very nice. I thought the budget question might help, but other than that I'm not much help since I have a Nikon D80 but all my friends that have Canons love their cameras as well. Good luck.

That's a SLR? Do I need a SLR camera to be able to take all those nice pictures I see here?

honestly i am not sure, i have seen some nice pictures with point and shoot cameras but for a photography newb like myself, i went with a slr to pick up the slack for my inexperience and it worked.

i am finally watching youtube videos this week such as the tidal gardens photography vids to get pointers on how to adjust aperture, shutter speed, iso, white balance, blackpoint, saturation, blah blah blah..sorry for the rant but yeah, my pics are all auto focus and auto everything else and they're not too shabby from what i've been told.

you need a nice lens to take nice pictures
yes and no...i just have the stock 18-55 mm nikkor lense and pics are pretty decent. of course if you get a macro lense and tripod then your pics will be fsm quality at that point IF you have a good post processing or photo editing software.

WOW!!! So much to absorb, but thanks I'm leaning towards the Canon now.

you can take okay pics with a stock lens but you will have a lot of missed opportunities when shooting. The fast focusing, the big aperture, and crisp detail is so worth the money when buying "L" lenses (for Canon) in my opinion. And if I'm going to take a lot of pics of my corals/aquarium I'd get a macro lens

Thanks, yeah I'd like to take some nice pix of my tank and corals. I'll invest in a macro lens.
