Hi All,

So right now I have my acrylic aquarium which was given to me by my brother and there are some scratches around the front and I am always scared to cause more so I a very careful when I clean the tank. Friday I saw a killer glass tank and I know I'll end up upgrading sooner or later and after seeing this glass tank it makes me think that is the direction I should go but living in so cal I've been told that acrylic is safer to have.

My question is who here was around during the 94 quake who had a glass tank that can share what happened?

Thanks!

I remember reading of a guy some where out in sylmar that had a 300 gallon or so. The tank rocked back and forth so much it hit the wall of the house and push the wall out 4". The the tank dam near brought down his house if it would have pushed the wall out any further.

I believe Jason at Tropical Reef Fish Store had a glass tank that broke. Might hit him up for the story

I had a 55 gal glass tank in 94 and lived a mile from the epicenter. The tank hit the ground like virtually all of my other furniture. Needless to say, it didn't survive. But It wouldn't have mattered if it was acrylic.

I now have a 340 glass tank. It's no less able to survive an earthquake than acrylic. I went glass because it doesn't scratch as easily.

Much safer then glass...period.
What do u mean safer? I've had a piece of acrylic snap on my while I was heat bending it and it put a 3" cup in my leg. So I beg to differ. Yes it is a little safer but if a big earth quake hit and a large acrylic tank hits the floor and explodes your going to get acrylic shrapnel flying around.

Comparing fish tanks: The integrity of "Acrylic" is stronger then glass, which makes Acrylic safer in a earthquake. Acrylic seams compared to glass seams, Acrylic wins again.

True there. But in a large quake we are all f***ed. All I know, in a large quake that my house doesn't live through it's some how going to burn down to the ground.

I am really just trying to figure out if acrylic is better to have because we live in quake country or if I should go with glass because it doesn't scratch as easy
