Definitely the economy...
but it could be a factor of other things.
I have noticed a lot of tank break downs here in the midwest as well.

If you want a big tank now is the time to do it, the people who are getting out are selling equipment cheap. I see big tanks, skimmers, chillers etc going for cheap everyday.

I just paid my Water & Power bill ... and that made me think about getting out. Instead, I'm downsizing my sump and lights... and going more fish heavy and less corals.

Being in LA County they have teirs for water just like Edison has for power. Luckily we don't have that.... yet.

My water bill is about $90 every 2 months, my electric bill is almost $300 a month, $200 of that I say is the tank. That means it cost me $2,400 a year just to run my tank....

$200 in electricity for just your tank? I have a 225 full sps reef at my house and I dont think its more then $30.
Not even close, first off noone with a tank is staying in the lower tiers of Edison. So if you are running 2x 250w MH lights for 10 hours a day those alone are costing you $50 a month. Then calculate your skimmer, reactor, powerheads, heater, chiller, actinic, return pump, fuge light, controller etc etc etc. Plsu with all that your paying in tier 5 rates so now your TV cost more to run. Its not only your tank that cost you money it now cost you more to run everything in yoru house because your in a higher tier.

2 years ago my bill before I ever had a tank was under $60 a month, so even if you calculate the rate increase since then my bill would only be around $80.

10 hours metal halide is a lot, try 6 I think you'll be happy with the results.
