Now that I got your attention. Thinking of turning 55 long to reef would you go with t-5s or metal halides set up ? How many watts ? Would like to be able to keep clams and sps. Thanks in advance.

If you are going to go with tek light I would do the 6 lamp 4 footer. That's 324 watts of awesome t5 power!

check out aquatinics as well. I heard they are better than the tek fixtures b/c they have built in fans.

I like the Teks because they don't have fans. Dead silent..but it probably reduces lamp life. I change my lamps out every 9-12 months or so though...I don't think it'll be a problem if you do periodic maintenance.

Are the fans on the tek lights loud ? Also do they produce alot of heat ? Thanks in advance.
The Teks don't have fans. And I wouldn't say they're HOT HOT, but they're hot.

TEK LIGHT T-5, 48" Light
Fixture 4 x 54W lamps
or
6x54w
Do you think the 4 lamps would be enough for clams and sps or should I look into the 6 lamps ? thanks

bump, (but lightly related)

I have the Hamilton 72" fixture. It has three 250MH on two timers, and two 72" VHO actinics on another timer.

The two outside (on the ends), MH are on one timer, the center is on its own timer.

When the two MH lights click on, there are two fans, (one sucking one blowing)

Those fans are rediculously loud. I am deaf, (I wear hearing aids in both ears), I can hear those fans without my hearing aids, from two rooms away, (maybe 45 ft)

It is the loudest component of my system. I would do anything to fix it, but I dont know how to measure dB, other then to buy dB meter, (anyone got one they can lend me)

I would like to verify that the fans I have now are within specification and tolerance, and then decide to buy something else based on a non indipendant testing lab

I am thinking about ducting the system through the wall, but not sure that could be done aestetically pleasing

Umm, fans are the way to go, just got to find the right fans with theright BALANCE of noise level and CFM (air movement)

The more air that moves the more noise you will have to deal with.

So, look at those to statistics on the fans that you are considering.

But even as loud as my fans are, they are a necessity, as without them, my chiller would be on full time now a days.

And by the way, having that chiller is a life saver, literally.

I have been in the hospital for the last couple days, and between the AC III and teh chiller, I could figure out how the tank was doing with just a couple simple questions to my daughter.

(as the water temp goes up, lights turn off, so just asking her what lights are on, tells me the temp, and at no time durignthe alst couple days did my lights go off, and my chiller was only on for about an hour total time for the last two days.)

Anyone that has a reef tank needs to set up temperature control measures. Not doing so, (after knowing that the area they are in, and the ambient temps that they have to deal with) is a true gamble

We are currently running the Tek T5 on many of our reef system without any heat issues. After 10 of run time I can still put my fingers directly on to the bulb and can hold it there no problem.

Reefgeek is a good place to get them online and you can upgrade the reflectors to the Icecap SLR reflectors which are slightly better than the TEK ones. I'm getting my stuff from HelloLights cause there local and I can save on the shipping but I have no idea how well there reflectors are rated. For SPS I would go with a 6 light model. I think the retros are better idea over a fixture so you can get what you want and then get stuck with the fixture if you want to upgrade lighting later. Adding fans to cool the ends of the lamp increases there output plus helps keep the tank cool
