Good question. Also I think the box volume is related to the pump strength to. eMac did your box dims come from something specific?
Nope 5.5 by 5.5. I've never put thought in the size of the box. More thought where I can put the box and building the box to fit that spot.

how low can you go without going into tsunami mode? pushing water around is great and all, but that looks like it could push the water right out of the tank.. >_<

also, why not have overflow slits at the top of the wavebox? there's no real incentive to keeping the volume of water low inside the box, is there? from the videos i've seen, the box's water level seems to consistently be lower than the tank's water.

You did a really nice job with your DIY!!!
Now my 2 cents about wave boxes......lol I understand why some hobbiest like wave boxes when they first set them up....but TO ME running a wave box all day and night is no different than sticking a 800lb bear in a 10' x 10' cage. If you don't think so stand in front of your tank and do the same back and fourth movement with your head and see how you like it:(
If you use a wave box put it on a timer so you have different flows through out the day in lieu of 24/7 Night at the Roxbury movement:) OK drugs are wearing off time to sleep.............

I'm pretty sure that void has something to do with the ability to create waves/surge. Otherwise seems pointless to have a box if there's an equilibrium with the tank. Once the tank gets the rhythm it stabilizes and won't go higher. Also tuning the speed of the pulses from the pump can help control the height and strength of the wave. I had the nano wavebox on my tank and had to detune mine a little to keep the waves from getting dangerously high.

Ya because fish don't like the 24x7 waves in the ocean. Haha

If you think that's like Ocean Flow then your watching to much Sponge Bob Square Pants...hAhA
yeah, i used to live on the delta at the north end of Taiwan, and i loved sitting there watching the waves come in, and recede, but there's definite differences in the intensity of the motion of the ocean. it's not full blast all the time.. :p

@ spinner I do have it connected to my controller. The box only runs about 9 hours a day. Also when I get it hooked up to an apex ill run it to two different types of waves throught out the day. I also have 2 mp40s and 2 wp25s on the tank also a 3600 gph return that is connected to a 1" sea swirl. I have so much crazy flow in the tank at times I get 4" vortech swirls in the water. Like I've said the wave box is to eliminate dead zone.

@ore u want the box to be above water level so that u create the displacement. Also when my return is on you don't get a wave in the water line like what is on the vid. Cause the the extra water gone down the overflow. I do get about a 1/4 inch wave in the water line when the return pump is on. But I still get the wave motion in the water it's self.

i may have to build one of these things just to try it out. i've got some 3/8" lexan from college project days that would be perfect for this.

I'll have to borrow Omar's WP-40 for size and build the box, and then throw it in Omar's tank to slosh all the water around and piss his wife off.. >:p
