I understand the benefits of a skimmer. But is one really necessary on a 15 gal? Wouldn't water changes suffice?

Yes. Water changes with huge carbon bags are doing the tank very well. I just need something in place so that I dont have to do water changes so frequently as I travel for work for weeks up to a month at a time

Something like this won't work? Biggest thing in tank is 1" or 3/4" pipe. Everything else is outside.

I dont like the way that one is exposed out of the tank. The reef glass is nice and all of it will fit into the back filter area
