Either internal or external is ok. I will have to check what I've got right now on my 100g cube......it's a cheapy brand that the guy who we bought the tank from (and who serviced the tank for the first year or so) put in to save money. Funny enough, it's lasted for years without any problems......knock on wood! I don't know how quiet and how energy-saving of a pump I can find since I can't spend a huge amount on one, but obviously those qualities would be preferable if possible.

I ran an Fluval SP4 on my last tank. It was about 150 gallons total water. Its high quality lasted a few years. Was still working when I sold the system. Not the cheapest pump out there but its reliable. Not dead silent but not very loud either.
