I got some pulsing xenia about 3 months ago and they aren't spreading like crazy...in fact they are not growing at all! They are full and healthy looking and pulse like crazy...they just don't multiply...lol what could cause this? I was always warned these things grow like weeds...lol

What is the xenia attached to? Is it isolated from other rock? If you want it to spread, put the frag up against whatever you want it to spread on to. Make sure the stem is touching, it should attach within a few days.

what are you parameters ??? Xenias thrive in slightly dirty water, if your nitrates are 0 that could be why there not growing, my nitrates are usually at around 3 to 4 ppm and mine grow like crazy. when ever I do get it down to 0 they usually don't grow as much.

Haven't tested my parameters in awhile. The few sps I have are doing great. My duncans have sprouted 4 new heads in the last few weeks. The random zoas and mushrooms I have don't grow and multiply either now that I'm thinking about it

Mine are not spreading as fast either. I think because of the water quality. Well, you don't want them to spread like weed any right? I have the yellow and orange tip cloves and they are spreading at first. They have slow'ed down a lot too.

I could never get Xenia to grow or even survive for the long term.
Mrs Adams and I really like the pulsating xenia too, we could care less about the SPS craze.
As an alternative I grow anthelia instead and let it slowly spead along one side of my aquarium.
Anthelia doesn "pulsate" like xenia does however water movement makes the coral flow in a similar xenia-like motion.

Yeah I keep mine on a single rock and when ever it seems like they are getting to close to another rock I pull the rock and and trim it down.

I recently killed my xenias. Plug fell off the rock over night, then my lovely pistol shrimp took it and buried it in one of his caves. Took me a couple days to find it... Really sad cause I liked them

I know how you fell! My pistol shrimp has dragged so many of my zoa frags off and killed them! and has buried numerous others!

Xenia is one coral I have never been able to grow. They do like "dirtier" water so if your params are "good" to us they usually are not to Xenia. As in sps doing well =xenia probably won't.

Haha, only thing my pistol shrimp has yet to kill is the Kenya tree. He keeps pulling it underground but that thing comes right back like nothing happened.

Starting to realize that. My params are are normally spot on. I try to keep my water clean in order to ensure the rest of my corals are doing fine. I prob will only attempt xenias again if I get a sweet deal.

I wouldn't try again man. You'll be wasting your money and killing another live creature. Just let go of Xenias...

Xenia can be a difficult coral to keep. Even in less than pristine conditions, sometimes ut just doesn't like your tank. The Anthelia is much easier to keep, and trim as well. Kevin is the one that turned me on to it. I have some growing next to my pulsing xenia and the anthelia definitely grows better.

The way I have gotten mine to spread is by putting the xenia rock on a steep incline so that they will grow up the rock. I cant seem to control mine at all. They are unpredictable though!
