What’s up ya’ll! My name is Brayden and I had a question about my zoanthids. I’ve noticed that some of my colonies have seemed to “shrink.” They’ll grow fine for months get 20-40 heads and then slowly shrivel up and fall off the rock they’re on into the abyss.

My levels are all fine and what’s even weirder is I have full blown colonies next to some that are shrinking that look incredible. I have lps & acros frags that all look solid. This scares me as I had a 12 polyp GMK colony just shrivel up and die over the span of a few days. I thought at first oh it’s just the classic GMK’s melting away but then it happened to another colony, and another, and another. I’ve probably lost 5 beautiful colony’s in the last 8 months. I’ve tried researching this a ton and just can’t figure it out. I’ve inspected the tank at night many times there are no pests.

Tank levels:
ALK: 8.7
Nitrate: 6
Phos: .06
Ca: 440
Mag: 1390

everything is stable for the most part. My thought was that the nitrates are bottoming out? So I started dosing a very small amount of neo nitro .5 ml just to see if that would make a change. If you zoom in below the clowns fin you can see how those are just shriveling up into thin air. LPS and SPS have been unaffected.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

unfortunately, that tends to happen to a lot of the higher end zoas. they grow into nice colonies and just melt away, which is why it’s good to continue fragging and have back ups. do you know what your iodine levels are? the par they’re receiving?
