An open volute pulls water from the under side of the skimmer, chops it all up makes bubbles and what not buts it already in the skimmer body. The initial reaction of water and air happens all inside the skimmer. In theory more efficient then the reaction happening outside then being pumped into the body. When the bubble/air mix is pumped in to the body you risk small ideal bubbles colliding and forming bigger non ideal bubbles. Some thing like that lol.
