Because that is not how a business should be ran. Maybe this misfortune will change the way he handles his customers.

It shouldn't take being called out, and having multiple people call you about it to get the ball rolling.

I am in no way wishing Johns company to be ran down, because I have seen some of his work and also heard good things about him. Just hoping that his customer service becomes grade A just as his craftsmanship.
I know all too well how business should be ran and that customer service a huge key to success but unfortunately in this case it didn't go according to plan or how it should of. I was just offering a solution to the problem that is mutually beneficial. The customer gets the product delivered and the builder gets paid. The builder has already taken a hit to his name by this thread so a point has been made. Now the customer can get his tank and not have to wait for another builder to build his tanks. Taking even longer now. Again this was just a suggestion. The op has e dry right to give his money to whomever he chooses. Hope all works out.

why not get them delivered and pay back the refunded money upon delivery. This seems to solve both problems. You now get your tanks and john is paid. Just a thought.

Makes perfect sense. BUT, how many times do I have to say to myself "Ok he sounds serious this time" before I get tired of saying it? He didn't stick to his word before and you can add up months of no communication on his end. If my tanks were done why didn't he let me know? I'm not going to give him another window of opportunity to give me an excuse.

And for clarification, the refund process has started for half of my money. If he has insufficient funds in his account, I won't recieve it. We'll see if I get half of what he owes on Friday. I'll keep this posted.

I dont like hearing Johns sales pitch attitude of what hes going to do for me, just to have him fall through. Again he's dodging texts and calls, not following through with the rest of the refund as promised. I would like my money back, please.

If you paid through Paypal I would call them right away, they will take care of it for you. Even if he doesn't have the money in his account they will front it and Bill him.

The first amount I sent him is past their date to dispute. I'm contacting my bank about a chargeback, but I'm hoping he won't put me through the hassle and just issue a refund.

Sucks that you guys didn't get the service I got. I don't pay in advance, I prefer to pay in cash on delivery.

that's a good point you bring up there wickedman. so maybe that might help others in the future when dealing with john. did you ask john if it was ok to pay cash on delivery or did you tell him that's what you would be doing?

Like Nick, I had a very similar experience with AA. No need to go into details, but I would not order another tank/sump from AA at any cost. Nor would I recommend them to anyone. I also know I am not alone in feeling this way. Good luck to those that have not had issues, but I know for a fact, his negative feedback is not just "bad luck". And way more people than necessary have been stuck on the "short end of the stick".

Good luck to those that may still take the risk, I will never do it again, at any cost.

+1 In life in general keeping your word is a must. But when the lively hood of you and your family depend on it, it doesn't get more important than that.

And just to update, John texted he would issue the remaining refund tomorrow evening.

Here's my experience with John from 2011.

It's funny how John will return a call for new business. I've refrained from telling my experience with John, but tonight was his last chance to redeem himself.

So sometime in the middle of April I decided to order a custom sump from John because of all great reviews here on RC. So I called him and left a message on his VM. About 10 minutes later I got a call back. To myself I’m thinking, cool, this guy is living up to his reputation. So couple emails go back and forth with sketches and I was getting super fast responses. At this point I’m thinking, WOW this guy is great. So I ended up picking up my custom sump May 8th. I go to his shop and check out the product. All looks perfect. The build quality is top notch. So on my way home back to Torrance I’m nothing but smiles because I got my brand new custom sump from AA. So I get home and continue to inspect and the main baffle that controls the water height of the skimmer area is 2” too tall. It’s 10” instead of 8” as depicted in the sketch. So I give him a call and he answers the phone right away. I tell him my problem and we came to the conclusion that a 2” skimmer stand would be best. He tells me “I’ll send that out tomorrow (Monday)”. I know when shipping stuff UPS or FedEx it usually comes next day since we’re both local. So I figured the latest it would come is Thursday or Friday. Saturday came and nothing. So I posted a thread here on RC “has anyone talked to John” and got lots of replies of how great he is and a couple of unhappy post as well. After more phone calls, more voicemails, more texts, and more emails, I got no response until this past Monday (5/17). I texted him and he calls me back and we talk and he says that “he’ll send it out tomorrow”. So Thursday comes (yesterday) and still nothing on my door step. So I figured I’d make it easy for him and tell him I’d pick it up at his shop to save him from shipping it. He says tells me to come today (Friday) at 7pm to pick it up. So I go out there this evening with my 4 year old (so that I can get in the carpool lane), fight the Friday night traffic and get to his shop and I knock on his door and NOTHING…… He wasn’t there. I called him and got no answer, I texted him and got no answer. So I wasted mine and my sons time today driving in Friday night traffic for empty promises.

It’s a good thing that this guy builds top quality stuff because his customer service is the worst. In my case, nothing but empty promises unless it’s new business.
