So my durso is pulling a lot of air down to the sump. It's not loud up top but once in the sump it is loud and creates a bunch of bubbles. Is this normal?

Yeah, same thing with mine. If you don't have a gate valve on your return that happens.

Mine did that when I first set up the tank but for some reason it began to settle in and not draw so much air.

My return pump is controllable but at the lower levels I don't get the flow I want.

Okay, I thought it might just be a breaking in thing.

The thing is I'm getting a lot of micro bubbles returned to the tank and so I think it's all the bubbles making their way to the return pump. If I make the hole bigger will that just cause more air to go down? I always thought the hole on the durso was to let the air escape up there and not go down to the sump.

How big is the hole now? I've seen pretty smart setups using airline tubing and an airline valve to fine tune. But if your hole is already bigger than that then pointless. You have an aquasock over the drain? That should slow down the microbubbles

Yeah, the hole is too big for airline hose but I can fit a plastic straw in there to do the same minus the air valve. I covered some of the hole to see a smaller hole would have helped but the durso just starts to suction the water so I don't think that would help.

I added a sock and it helped. I also raised the water level in the pump section but can't go much higher. All new pipe and such...maybe it just needs a good coat of saltwater slime and then I'll be good.

how far down is the drain pipe going underwater in the sump? I think if it's too deep it creates more turbulence

Never heard of a durso "breaking in" before.

This is why I went with a dual drain setup. Obviously it's too late for that, I would look into a new sump. Multiple chambers will keep the bubbles from reaching ur return pump.

I have the same issue on my 180 and my frag tank and my chicks tank before I did a herbie drain. Single durso's are like impossible to get the air from not going to the sump. One thing I did was add a gate valve to the drain. Helped stop a lot of bubbles.

Maybe you drilled the hole too big or the neck is too low?

Just read that's you did. Easiest fix is to remove it and do it right, amateur. You always start with a tiny/tight hole and then like everything else holey ;-) you loosen it up lil by lil till it's perfect.

Can't really explain it but mine did get quieter after a few days of running. Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure with the few angles and the use of couplers would create pockets for air to get trapped and add turbulence to the drain. Eventually the flow probably pushes it out allowing the water to slip down smoother and allowing air to escape easily.

I have a gate valve on one of the two drains (it's split below the bulkhead). The sump has 3 chambers with baffles for each...I don't think it's my sump.

Is it coming from the drain going to the sock or the other
It's coming out of both. I spent some time adjusting the gate valve on the one and didn't really notice a difference at any point.

Yeah, maybe you're right. But when I covered the current hole to make it smaller it would start a siphon.

This is what i was thinking...some trapped air. But it's a lot of air and I think beyond that.

The hole on top is to prevent the durso from slurping/gargling. The bubbles ur getting is from turbulence in the pipes from falling/crashing. Get a water bottle and shake it up...What happens? Bunch of bubbles right? It has to do with the amount of water flow and the pipe size...but I can't figure out how to stop it.
