Wondering if there is anyone local who can get specific fish instead of me having to get lucky at my local fish stores. I don’t really want to buy online and deal with shipping. Anywhere in greater Los Angeles to OC to inland empire I guess

Ellis Aquatics can usually get you what you want at a great price.

Reach out to Adam from Ocean Devotion LA, he can get you what you want and offers fully QT'd fish as well. He's really good with the details and hand selects the fish. He's my go-to guy for fish.

Dooly on this forum has got specific fish for me, and even done a full quarantine with treatment for me before I pick them up. His setup/practice is legit. Only place besides Biota I plan to buy fish going forward.

When you see his QT tanks you will understand. All of the tanks are immaculate.

He'll tell you if it is a bad time for a specific fish as well. Really smart guy.

Second. @Dooly is on the lookout for a juvenile/female pink streaks and ruby longfin fairy for me.

Just looked into them and wow you’re right they have a huge selection compared to my other local stores. I hadn’t gone since the beginning of covid lol forgot all about them tbh I had only been there once. Definitely going to go there soon

Awesome source to have! But holy cow those QT fish are expensive! Is it really that much work to QT a fish?

I think the cost gets spread over the cost of medicating/observation + unavoidable fish deaths (you pay for a fish and want a live one, QT'er eats the cost of fish that don't make it) + a bit of extra for the QT'er.

It's essentially double the price for a non-QT'd fish. Yes, it takes weeks at minimum to fully QT a fish. If anyone tells you the fish is fully QT'd and it only takes a week or two, stay away from them. The only method that works in 14 days is Hybrid TTM, but then the fish should go into observation before entering the display just to make sure everything worked, which adds more time. You'll need the space, two tanks with everything to keep them going, heaters, fresh saltwater, etc You'll need a bucket or something for the baths between each transfer, so there's a lot to QT'ing a fish and as mentioned above, the person who you buy the fish from doesn't charge you for the fish that don't make it. If you have an established tank and don't QT, you're playing Russian Roulette and your mileage may vary.

Yes it is! If you question it, be like me and try it. You'll find the amount of knowledge it takes, time and tears. However, if you truly enjoy the process....it won't be work, it'll be fun and rewarding.

httm is simple enough, but it's gonna be more work if you have less stuff

like i have 5 10g tanks sitting around. a bunch of small heaters, a bunch of powerheads, lots of pvc pipes, and i keep a bunch of little biomedias in my dt sump so basically i just fill tanks with water and httm them. then when i have time i'll empty and sterilize the tanks

you can technically do it with just 2 of everything, but then when you swap tanks you gotta clean and sterilize everything immediately so it's ready for the next round

httm is great because you can do whatever you need with it. if a fish has a bacterial issue, you can toss in abx. if a fish is uronema prone, substitute formalin for the peroxide and you can dose formalin. you can do prazi/general cure a day before a swap. etc

that said, you'll probably quickly figure out spending $50-100 more is sometimes totes worth. especially difficult fish that are hard to get eating

Not gonna lie there are acronyms and words I’ve never heard before there but you have me convinced that QT is quite the process to be done right and the price of a QT fish reflects that. Guess it’s even more worth it when you’re a guy like me without the funds or space to have multiple tanks around the house for QT to begin with
