So after having the Kessil 350w Tuna Blue for a few months, I never really liked the color of the tank. It was over the JBJ30 RL (24*18*16). No matter how much adjusting of the colors and intensity, I could never really get the color I like. So in my search to try another light, I decided to pick up a Halo from AquaticLife. The Halo is cheaper and the current Kessil 360 and has a built in controller and so far I like most of it.
Heres a pic of them side by side

As you can see, the Halo is larger and bulkier looking. I like the sleek look of the Kessil better.

As far as the controller goes, I like that its built in but it does have some down falls. Theres no internal battery to keep the settings. From what Ive read on their website is that theres a capacitor that will keep a short charge but for any extended power outage, youll have to reprogram the light. I do like that it does have a dawn/dusk channel, daylight channel and a moonlight channel as well as a ramp up/down for each of the channels.

Now for the most important part, the light. Pulling from the AquaticLife website channel 1 is a full spectrum which includes a UV 400nm x1, UV 420nm x1, Royal Blue x2, Blue 465nm x2, Blue 470nm x5, Blue 475nm x2, Blue 480nm x4 . Channel 2 is a white light which has Blue 470nm x4, Cool White x4.
I tried looking up the number of diodes the Kessil has but was not able to find on their website.
Heres a under exposed picture so that I can get all the Diodes in the picture

Overall, I really like the color of the Halo. I can get that 14k look I like that I just couldnt get out of my Kessil.

Good to hear a short term review. Keep us posted
I haven't had a whole lot of time to play with it, hopefully this weekend. It seems a lot brighter than the Kessil. I'm going to borrow a PAR meter to give real world numbers.

If your apex is used to turn it off (no power), then yes, it will lose its programming. If you plug it into a backup power supply, then LEDs will be using the power as well so depending on the power supply, it may not last as long.

All the programming is done internally so im not sure what you would benefit from turning it off with your apex. Set ON and have no other programming for the light on the apex. If you loose power youd loose your programming, but atleast youd get real world amp readings and what not.

i can't wait to get my 3. looking forward to the much simpler setup for the 180.

i'm so disappointed that it doesn't come with epileptic seizure mode though.. now i'm gonna have to get separate lights for when I want to have a rave at my house.

well for the Halo there are two different ones one with a controller and ones with out so that would be why u would hook up to a controller like a apex

oh nice! If you go with no controller there is no information for it to loose, so the issue would be gone. solitude127 do you have an apex?

I do but not for this tank. I just have an RKL for basic functions.

Oh, I didn't know that either. I was under the impression that it could only be a slave to the Deluxe halo. If you have someway to control 0v - 10v, then you can save yourself $50 and get the basic

I am glad you are enjoying the Halo LED.

Yes there are two versions. The Deluxe comes with an on board controller and retails for $349. It acts as a master unit. The Halo Basic retails for $299 and has no controller. The basic is used as a slave or if you have a controller like an Apex or something similar that has a 0-10v input you can control them that way.

i plan to get one delux and 2 standards - even though i have an apex.

i don't want to go buy a VDM for the dimming when the delux version already does everything for half the cost.

i guess maybe if i can find a used VDM for 50 bucks, it'd be worth looking into, but having the easy to program ramp up / ramp down, plus the night light etc all built in is pretty nice.

Doesn't the apex have 0v - 10v ports on the base unit?
