Actually, it was my wife who was woken by dripping water, she in turn kicked me to wake up...we came out to the tank to find the tank overflowing, any tank owners worst nightmare.
After panicking, fiddling, and searching, I took a flashlight down the durso to see snails. Several. I always keep a fishing rod by the side of the tank and was able to push the 3 margarita snails down the return into the sump. They had collected just right to clog my durso.

Question: What do you guys do to prevent this? I'm thinking simple mesh over the durso opening should do the trick. Any other ideas?

Dang, mesh is probably your best bet. Or if you're return line is inside the overflow box use that as an emergency line and run a new return over the back rim of the tank. Every tank I set up now I use at least 1 Emergency drain cause of this.
