I recently bought a fish from a user on an online forum @sixshot00 , but when I brought it home, I realized it was deformed—the fish’s eyes were noticeably uneven, with one much larger than the other. I contacted the seller to request a refund, but he claimed that he had owned the fish for four years without noticing any issues and refused to accept the return. He argued that once I paid and took the fish, it was no longer his responsibility. The seller originally sold me a package of three fish, and I wanted to return all of them, but he only agreed to take back the problematic yellow tang and offered to refund $125. I’m unsure how to handle this situation and would greatly appreciate any advice. How should I deal with this kind of issue?

Did you not look at the fish before you bought them? Did you pick them up, or did he ship them to you? If he said he would give you a partial refund for the fish that you had an issue with, where is the problem? If you buy a fish at an LFS, it is yours, no refunds. Did you expect different circumstances?
I feel that I am missing a part of the story here.

I picked the fish at night time, and he put all the fish into one bucket. We met outside, and I could only see that the fish were alive. He asked me to return the yellow tang and offered me a $125 refund. This means I spent $200 to buy a 3.5-inch blue tang and a 4-inch sailfin tang.

Also i am only interested in yellow tang, he sell them as a combo, actually i do not need blue tang or sailfin tang.

You should of just bought one at your local fish store if you were after the yellow tang only. They aren't even that expensive fish to begin with.

It is always good to request videos and photos before buying and selling, that is how I do it; buyers and sellers protection.
It sucks what happened to you
Seller should state the appearance of the fish.

Maybe the fish was kept under poor conditions and needs a quality environment? Good food, healthy system = healthy, happy fish. Fish aren't perfect, at closer inspection you can pick out a lot of differences (just like us). Honestly, if it's eating and otherwise healthy, I think you'll be okay. Lesson learned, ask to see the fish in proper lighting, eating, etc.

I have 180 gallons tank, and biota yellow is too small in my tank.

Seller keep that fish for 5 years and he said he never noticed, that is ridiculous.

I think this is just one of those no win situations. Just take it as a lesson learned on both sides. Next time, both buyer and seller should send more photos of each fish and provide more details of any potential issues. At this point, It's not what each side expected and move on. Personally, I would have kept the yellow tang as it is not popeye and it may be just how this particular fish looks. I would have named him "Popeye the Sailor Man" for fun.

I've learned many lessons in this hobby. I've rescued fish that were supposedly clean or QT'ed, and then infecting my whole tank with ich. I've bought fish that were not what it was described and I took it home, and paid a lot for it, but seller did give me some corals to make it up. I bought corals that were half dead, and didn't see it as it was one of those meet at the gas station deals. It happens all the time. Just gotta learn and not repeat the same mistakes. Go on and get it off your chest, then just gotta move on and enjoy the hobby.

I hope Reefer will stay away from such irresponsible and unscrupulous seller in the future.

I’m not sure if this fish is healthy. Its swimming posture is different from the other fish, and it stays at the bottom of the tank all the time, which looks very strange.

I'm confused -- you sent this message at 8:48pm and later at 11:20pm, you said that he's a "Great seller ever"?

Anyway, I think the refund of $125 is more than fair for the "deformity". You bought all 3 fish (yellow, blue, sailfin) for $300 so ~$58/each? That's a steal, my friend! :)

Speaking of the "deformity" -- I didn't notice it from the pics and make this fish "unique" and not just another boring yellow tang! If you can't live with this "deformity", I'll rescue the fish for $75 - you actually made money? :)

Would you spend $200 for one 3.5 inch blue tang and 4 inch sailfin tang?

This is a tough one. I agree seller should have disclose the issue especially if asked is anything wrong with the fishes? Not sure if that question was ever asked? But at same time once the buyer trades money and takes the fish especially after seeing it, it's really all on the buyer.

JImbo327 said it best.
