I was wondering how many peeps are bare bottom or sand bed in their dt. What do you recommend and why? Thanks for your input...I'm thinking of going bare bottom to avoid the junk buildup and to have a cleaner look.

Pix would be cool of bb tanks.

ain't no fun if a reefer can't have none!

Bare bottom here, I like to run a lot of flow and don't want to worry about sand being blown around.

I have done a few different one's and had a bare bottom for about a month..lol
One was 3" deep that I cleaned when doing water changes, One was 6" only cleaned top surface 1' or so, One was NNR and it worked well so I think its what you choose after doing your research:)

BB here and never going back (wish i would have started BB) I had a 2" sand bed and liked it at first but I couldn't keep the sand crisp white and I like a ton of flow went Bb and instantly loved it you can have as much flow as you want with out worrying about sand storms or glass showing

With sand and before re aquascaping

I'm in the process of going bb and I made the poor choice of using crushed coral and I think that may be one reason I'm seeing higher nitrates because all the crap gets stuck in there

Thanks...... I siphoned out all my sand out at once since my sand wasnt so deep I did get a mini cycle so if possible do it in sections and wait a couple days inbetween to avoid a cycle also couple things to consider is live stock if you want/have wrasses or any other sand dwellers your not going to be able to have them

I'm tuning sand in my display and be in my 24x24x10 because I need a lot of flow. Personally I like the natural look of sand and will be using a sand bed in my next big tank.

crap doesn't settle in your sand bed, therefore you are able to better control phosphates and nitrates by syphoning out crap ergo corals grow faster with very little effort. atleast IME.

I like the look of pristine sand and the natural shimmer. That being said the practical side, BB is super easy/no hassles. I have multiple tanks and all are BB, can't imagine having sand anymore.

Looks only Sand wins
Practical side BB wins

BB starting to look nice as montis and zoas are propagating on the bottom.

I think this is the perfect example of how your tank will look with and without sand. It's personal preference.

I like sand and how it makes a tank look bright and shimmer. I like having wrasses and want to get some really nice ones.

Bare bottom. Your tank will look purple with all the coralline growing on the bottom. Higher flow without sand stirring everywhere.

Agreed the tank did look brighter with sand (also the pic are are taken with diffent camera the sand with an iphone4 the BB with iphone5 for wht its worth the iphone5 pic came out closer to actual color) I also miss some of the sand dwellers but nothing I can't live without with that said I feel I like the color alot more without sand I also like how my corals are encusting to the glass and how nothing builds up on the bottom it's all personal preference
