I see people post all the time about selling coral per head and a lot of the time its "splitting". i understand that it will become 2 heads in the future but the actual full split of a head takes quite a bit of time.SO.... my question is why is it sold as two heads?? every coral has the potential of splitting into more heads ( referring to mostly euphyllia for this conversation) if thats the case couldnt you sell a coral for 2 heads if its one head with the potential of splitting? i personally think 2 heads should be two fully seperate heads to count. Thats my opinion, anyone want to chime in with their experience?

Depends…are you paying the price of one head or two? If I’m buying and paying the price of one head and it’s splitting and on the way to two heads then that’s a bonus to me. Just my take on it.

Well i see a lot of ppl selling heads of let's say a torch as splitting. It's one head that is splitting so they charge the price of two heads. Two heads is two heads and they should be completely separated at least for me. Why should I pay for two heads because it will be potentially two heads in maybe a few months of growth under the right conditions

I’ll also add, this scenario came up with a local reefer. (Reef Runners), in Hemet. I was trading a coral for a green tip torch. The torch was “slitting but not split”. He called it a “bonus” and gave it to me. Since he said it would not be right to classify it as a two headed torch. Will definitely be buying from him again. Almost my entire tank if from his garage.

thats awesome. ive just dealt with a lot of sellers saying because it is splitting... its price is now for two heads instead of the clearly one.which is a lot of BS. i think the word splitting is a good way to describe a healthy coral in its growth?

I think that the LPs and zoa's I have gotten from sellers they consider it to be a head even if it is just starting. (High end or really any torches/zoa's) If you buy from local people they are more likely count it as an additional head, but some won't.

Also its always worth the try of asking for a different price it hasn't worked for me yet. But I know I am more willing to give people coral or trade as they are animals that need love once I have become friends with them.

Also why do we pay such high prices for these things that are being grown in the ocean and do not have restrictions any more? Why aren't we helping each other out?

Another question I wonder is would you be more willing to buy from a vendor that will charge you 70% more because a fun name than someone selling from there garage?

a lot of good points. as far as high prices well its because just like anything else... its all about trying to be unique or outdo each other. its kinda of like oh my torch is better than yours type deal i think. but its also fun collecting and collecting is exepsnive.having unique coloration is expensive. The vendor thing, i honestly think vendors abuse the idea that they are a "Store" so their products are classified as "new" items or better. im pretty sure there are many reefers that have substantially better corals in their garages than many LFS. a lot of LFS charge retail prices because yea i know thats the business but damn it feels like gouging at this point especially when it comes to "hot" corals. or even fish.

Nop I would not. Lol. I have bought all my coral from local reefers, with the exception of one mushroom. “Reef Runners” is a local, not a store. But he wheels and deals from his garage. I enjoy the conversation and the experience more buying local.

But I would 1000% pass up a “splitting coral” if someone was trying to charge me for two heads... that’s just someone taking advantage. IMO. Definitely a, “ok bye” situation and bring my money elsewhere.
