No way bolts will do anything with water swaying or tank rolling, unless you have a nano.

Man you have me paranoid for my kids. Other than that is it comes and knocks it over, so be it.

There are things that can be done to decrease the risk of the tank falling over.

1. use an oversized wooden stand. The more extra clearance around all edges the better, like 6inches extra beacause earthquakes cause lateral sheering forces. Try to build a pyramid structure. I think wood is better than steel because its flexible and would act like those springs under buildings.

2. as stated above a lip would restrict lateral movement, so would any plumbing under the tank. So multiple drains & return from under the tank at the corners straight down to the sump would help anchor the tank to the stand.

3. avoiding a canopy and sitting fixture, use a hanging fixture instead

4. as stated above, running with the DT volume as low as possible

5. securing CO2 gas tanks, reactors, lights, etc.

6. avoid plumbing going through walls. Try to keep the tank + stand as independent as possible. Allow it to wiggle a few feet sideways unimpeded.

7. I agree with using acrylic tanks- much stronger

8. GFCI outlets

Thats all i can think of...

dude please STFU... we're talking about tanks... a tank is going to weigh more than 10lbs per gallon depending on stand, material of tank, filtration, sand and rocks... i didn't say that water weights more than 10 pounds per gallon...

don't start okay...
LOL..
You please STFU! You can see me whenever your ready, stop hiding behind your keyboard.

Parking please not in the venue I don't want blood on the nice scr carpet
LOL... like in the first MAX show... i stomped on some fou... he had 3 friends and none of them stepped in... straight out stomped on that cat in the parking lot...

anyways... i think a nano will still take down some bolts... a 10g cube will weigh about 140lbs give or take... plus the movement of the water will give it enough momentum to break any bolts or straps...

Well, I dunno about it tearing my wall down, I'm pretty sure the 4 screws per tie in would give out before the wall does :p Our floor is springy, because of the joist spacing (according to Johnny's grandpa and our house inspector) and I didn't like how the water moved when I stepped off the stairs in front of it. So I had him attach it to the wall.

Eat a **** gumbie. Save your fight club fantasy stories for the birds.

Anyway. Best thing to do during an earthquake is not be around your tanks if it's a large tank or made of glass. Although first instinct as a reef hobbiest is to rush over and hold your tank in an effort to save it, but just let it go. U can replace the tank and fix any damage. Your safety and the safety of family is more important.

Ok I'd rather have a HUGE hole in the wall than 100 gallons of water on my carpet... couches.. computer...

But I guess if the walls gave out the tank would still fall...

Ahahhahahhah No he said not to go over like an idiot and hold the one of the many things you can replace.
