MYbe siphon it out into a tub Nd have. Pump in the Tu. To pump the water back in. Is out filter sock in the return line cause I assume there will be a lot of crud. If you scoop be careful to not scoop it up onto the glass. That will scratch it easily.

do inch by inch... your brittle stars will end up starving and dieing... i'm barebottom, and only see two gigantic bristle worms in the entire tank... there's really no clean up crew... probably some pods in the rocks, but that's all i see... if you have a refugium, well they might live in there...

Siphon it out in sections with each water change. Don't try to get at it in layers, you want to remove it in sections (front left corner, middle rear, you get the idea). Use a thicker walled tube so it doesn't kink and clog. Go as big in diameter as you can and still be able to use your thumb to stop the flow, 3/4" is a pretty good size.

Congrats on making your life so much easier. And btw, in my sps tank (bb) I have tons of pods and critters and bristleworms running around the bottom, the rocks and even the acrylic panels. But yea remove one section at a time like right front corner one day then back left corner another day and you will see it wont affect your tank at all.

Following along.. Been thinking of doing this in my SH tank.. Only things I'm afraid of is : how ugly will the acrylic bottom panel be and trying to maintain my Tonga Jenga aqua scape design lol

Do it !!! I have tons of critters running around. If you have OCD like me you might spend a few more hours weekly doing maintenance but nothing crazy. Corals **** a lot! Lol

i had a deep sand bed and got really tired of it. i siphoned it out during a water change. i agree with dan about using a thicker tube, it will prevent the sand from getting stuck in the tube.

much easier... why would it be much easier? good flow takes all the debris out... i was also thinking of doing this ... reason - to much flow in my tank will keep sand from going everywhere

I'm wondering if BB will help with nutrients? My SH tank is so low flow that I'm fighting algae and of course ponies are dirty! I know it will help w collecting the uneaten mysis and the ponies will find it easier on bb... But with no sand is it less nutrient, or is it less bio filter ( then causing more nutrient) ?
