HANNAH CHECKERS ARE OFF

What's up SCR familia. I recently sent off an ICP test to Reef Moonshiners and got back my results and was a little surprised.

My Phos has consistently been reading very high on my hannah checker around .17-.25. I was getting pretty concerned and when I sent the test off I got a reading back from them at .06... Similarly my ALK always reads around 8.8-9.0 I test it literally every day and the test from them came back at 8.1 for ALK.

I love the products ease of use but am wondering if my physical testers need to be replaced? They are over 2 years old and I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced something similar?

also to mention reagents are brand new and I even do the tests sometimes 2-3 times to confirm the number.

Could be the reagents that are off, vials need to be cleaned better, …. Buy new reagents, if it’s still off, and under warranty, Hanna will replace them

Test kits are very tough. In my opinion it is all about consistency if your parameters are different test kits is it always a concern. Who to say your test are right and the other is wrong. You know need a third test kit to go that route and it is a rabbit hole.
what may truly be is the vails as they do get dirty and our eyes do not see it. I also do think the photometers that Hanna uses have to be super cheap to sell those at the price point that they are offered. They could just fall out or range who knows
If you are looking for a different brand of test I am a huge fan of salferit these kits other then the cheap box that they come in. I have never questioned their accuracy

I don't think ICP tests Phosphates or Alkalinity. Which ICP are you using?

I trust the Hanna for phosphates and alk.

Hanna also sells standards to check your meter. I think they may be on sale right now. But they range from $15-20 depending.

Make sure you change out your batteries regularly. Even if your checker is working, old batteries could yield inaccurate results.

Most people only pay attention to the reagents expiration. However, batteries that could be getting old will give you inaccurate numbers.

Think of it like a flashlight....which could still work even with old batteries but will not perform as well or be as bright compared to new batteries.

It does if you buy one that tests those for parameters. Used reef moonshiners ICP test

Just be aware that ICP cannot directly test for alkalinity or phosphate. ICP test for single elements. They may be testing alkalinity with titration method, and just reporting that data along with the ICP data for all of the elements. The PO4 phosphate number may be calculated from phosphorus, but transit time may impact phosphorous results. One of the reason I trust Hanna because testing happens immediately. But get Hanna’s calibration standards to confirm.

How do you clean your vials? Also, what are you using to measure 10mL? I use a separate 10mL vial that’s clearly marked. I fill it once with tank water, dump that into the vial to rinse both, then grab my sample. The white markings on the vial are off, so you need something that shows 10mL precisely. Both my Hanna checkers for phosphorus and alk are at least 8 years old and are still working just fine.
You can also buy new cuvettes if yours are old?
I rinse mine with RO thoroughly and dry out with paper towel..

Another thing to point out as far as Hanna po4 results go is that if your tank is high in silicates it will interfere with the readings of your checker. Just a heads up
