This is a great article that talks about how wrasse pairs are not always necessary for a female/submale to turn into a terminal male. All the wrasse pairs I have bought, no matter what size between the pair has ended up in fighting. My flames fight, my bluestars fight, and now my pintails started bickering with each other when the tiny female started getting bigger.
I'm hoping that my Earl's will transition into a terminal male in the company of my other wrasses. An Earl's pair would just be too expensive and I'd hate the risk of them fighting.
On top of this, it's funny how fish stores sell "pairs" by basically putting together a bigger wrasse with a smaller one. There is more to it than this.
