Somebody just called me to ask if brass is safe for their SW tank. I told them no because I am pretty sure I remember reading something in the past that said not to use something with brass screws or something. But he said that the only float valves that he can find are made with a brass pole. I checked and so is mine. Is this bad?

What are your float valves made of???

As far as I know it's not awful, but it does oxidize. There are many float valves that are all plastic. Even people like you that live in the sticks usually have a lowes or Home Depot and anti siphon toilet float valves are usually plastic.

Brass is a copper/zinc alloy, it hass good corrosion resistant characteristics but you don't want it in your reef tank because of the copper.

I use Kent flowat valve, they're all plastic: Kent plastic float valve

I agree with Aaron but have seen people run brass fittings and other brass parts in reef tanks with no negative effects. I have seen many things I wouldn't do or recommend work. That's probably why there are so many ways to get things done,in this hobby.
