i've been neglecting the tank lately and it has gone downhill a bit.

i basically started a new job which is pretty time consuming. coincide that with picking up a box of reef crystals because i thought i'd give high alk a whirl for awhile. well, the tank did not like it and i didn't really have the time to do proper management, so.. welp

i spotted some TN on a couple corals a couple weeks ago. i figured they'd be toast by now, but both are still hanging on. i have since spotted one more that has some substantial TN on it, but ngl.. 2 of the 3 i'm borderline rooting against. vivid rainbow and a tricolor stag from steve garrett are the 2 bad ones and i'm rooting against them so i can get some non-green acros in there. tanzenite terror is the 3rd, but it hasn't really continued to TN so i'm hoping i can lower the alk and it'll be no worse for the wear. i tested alk for the first time in over a month and i'm at 10.4, so i'm gonna hopefully do another water change next weekend with purple bucket and get down to 9ish hopefully before RAP

i did pick up a couple fish recently from fishotel, an african exquisite fairy wrasse and a radiant wrasse. the radiant got popeye a couple days after i got her and then promptly lost the eye like a day later, so that sucks, but she has been adjusting and seems good to go. she's eating pellets and flakes which is a must in my tank these days. i think i'm up to like 26 fish now, and it wasn't apparent to me until i added the tiny wrasses, but my fish are pretty big. so i should probably chill on fish.. but i really want a regal angel

Yeah, what's happening? Both the pieces I got from you are doing great. The "not pearlberry" is taking off and the katropora is slowly getting bigger. Hope all is well with you and your tank.

not much has changed from the last update.. the tank is pretty doodoo. i lost a lot of corals due to the super slow stn, corals that have lived are kinda dormant

there's some hilariously long hair algae going hard in the paint. i was just kinda waiting it all out, but i still haven't really been able to up my maintenance game with my job. i basically swap filter socks, dump out skimmer, and repeat. i haven't tested anything in months. i'm kinda floored i even have any sps left lol

that all said, today i decided to probably shut the tank down in the near future. not that i've lost interest, but i want to change the floors in my house and i think a downsizing for the tank would be beneficial. smaller water changes are easier to do, so i think i'd rather just keep 2-3 smaller tanks than this one. i'll have to rehome the larger fish which sucks, i really love my big fish, but it is what it is

Lmk if you want some acropora when you're ready. Your "not pearlberry" is really taking off now and the katropora is slowly growing. Plus, I'll give you some other pieces when you're ready. If you're considering downsizing or rebooting, buy some real ocean live rock. You don't need much, but it's the best thing out there.

thanks guys

yeah i'm not in a rush to do anything drastic, but it has kinda been on my mind for awhile. plus the flooring thing is really something i want to do. plus life has just taken my interests to other things even without factoring in work. i still love the hobby, but i'm not nearly as into it as i was a year or so ago. we'll see, but that's currently my thinking

When I first moved to SoCal we didn't bring our zoo with us, just a cat. I was without a tank for nearly 13 years, which was the longest dry spell I've ever had. Changing careers, saving for a house and planning a family put other things on the back burner. Priorities move around a little, but this hobby was always on my mind and something that never left me, but once I had everything else taken care of (sort of), I started small and worked my way back. You have to do what's right/best for you and go from there. Either way, we have you covered when you're ready.

We've all been in your same spot one time or another. Priorities change. For a lot of us, it's careers, relationships, relocation, cost or kids. And reefing fatigue is a real thing. But you will always have the itch to come back to the hobby once the priorities shift again. It happens to all of us.

Find ways to lessen maintenance and automate so that you only need to do maintenance once a month. I would set up an AWC with a brute trash cans. Add a 5 gallon bucket for skimmate locker, I built one, it's easy. Set up auto feeder. Put the rest on APEX. That'll buy you so much time for your other priorities. You can find 1 weekend out of the month to refill and do maintenance. This can sometimes get you out of the reefing fatigue.

But like others have said, you do what is best for you. Best of luck!
