Hi all been away from the hobby for a while, but finally made it back. Decided to eaze my way back into the hobby, so I started off with a 20g Nuvo Fusion AIO. Tank is still in cycle process, but I'm starting to create my list of fish i want to have in there. Gobies are on my list, and at minimum, I will be doing a yasha w/red banded pistol shrimp. I'm contemplating on adding a high fin goby along with the above mentioned since I read that these two particular gobies can coexist together. It also crossed my mind to add 2 pistol shrimp, one for each. Does anyone have personal experience on this that can share? Thanks

I don't have experience with a high fin goby but got a pair of biota mandarin goby that got along for a year+ before the female got super aggressive toward the male one day. I learned that each fish have their own personality and environmental factors also contribute to weather two will coexist long term

The very reason I'm asking in the forum for personal experience. Seems like a long shot, but tempted to try it out. My plan is to eventually upgrade from the 20g to a 50-60g, but that won't be for a good year or two. So at dome point in the foreseeable future, they'll have more room.

It depends, sometimes the shrimp will pair up themselves? I had this happen for a while, but the "new" shrimp maybe lasted a year in a 90g. I'm not sure what happened, but it wasn't a long term relationship. You can certainly try two shrimp, but try to find two about the same size and also look for shrimp that have the larger "pistol" claw on opposite sides. It's a mind story, but some believe that this difference is enough for them to coexist. Or, you can try different gobies that occupy different areas of the tank so there's no a lot of competition for real estate, which may lead to aggression.

I have a Yasha goby paired with a Candy Cane pistol shrimp and a yellow watchman goby paired with a tiger pistol in a 65g with no problems. But they have their burrows on opposite sides of the tank, and the Yasha stays “local”. The watchman and Tiger pistol do venture out, but even if he gets close to the Yasha there are no issues. A 20g may be too small though, and there definitely need to be good places to set up a home as far away from each other as possible.

I also have a Starry Goby and a Blue Neon Goby in there, and used to have a Court Jester Goby as well, and everybody got along.

I created multiple caves in the rock work for this very reason, so they do have choices. Your response is definitely helping me lean towards trying it lol

On the previous tank i was running before my break, I had 5 different gobies. Yasha/pistol, yellow, green & black clown goby & a rainford goby. They all got along, there was no issues. The yasha goby was the only one in the sand bed, I'm thinking that might of been the reason. 2 fish looking for burrows in the sand bed might be a different situation. Previous tank was bigger as well, ran a 60 cube back then

It all depends on the fish. I don't think it'll be an issue. They might squabble, but I think they'll work out their territory somehow.

Wanted to give an update on the gobies for anyone who may be curious. So I ended up going with 2 gobies and 2 pistol shrimp. Went with a yasha haze, hi fin & 2 candy stripe pistol shrimp. Bought them all at the same time, and all got dropped in together. I threw a pistol in each fish bag to aclimate them together. One pistol was very defensive, and the other one paired up immediately. One of the pistols ended up solo on the right side. Both gobies live on the same side, pretty close to each other. So far, there has been zero aggression between the two gobies.

Yasha & pistol shrimp in their burrow. Clownfish hangs out with him for some reason, no aggression

They're awesome to watch once they get comfortable in the tank. I break reef rock into ruble and drop it right in front of his burrow. it's entertaining to watch the pistol move the big pieces around and decorate

Update on my gobies. Decided to take it up a notch, and added a 3rd goby i added a yellow watchman goby this past weekend. So far, they haven't killed each other. The yasha and watchman seem to get along great!! Hi-fin and watchman, not so much. Hi-fin stays in his burrow for the most part, but if the watchman gets too close, he'll come put and fight. Brief nipping at each other, but nothing crazy.
