So, I am going to be documenting my 73g Starfire tank build, here on socalireefs. I will be starting to build the stand this weekend, with the help of my father-n-law.

I will be taking a ton of pictures and posting them on here. I am going to try and get it as step-by-step as I can, however, sometimes it can be hard...as some of the stand building goes so fast, I am going to have to remember to stop and take pictures for documentation.

Anywho, I hope you guys come along for the ride as I am sure it will be a fun one!

Alright,

So it has been a while since I updated my new build thread. Here is the latest going on...

I got an acrylic 3 baffle sump

I got a Mag 18 to power my main system

I also got a 3 month old Reef Octopus Extreme 300 or 200? running the needle wheel PSK-2500 series skimmer pump

Due to family complications I will have to wait til next week to finally get my stand. It looks like it is going to be a turkey day celebration for more than thankgiving!

My future purchases will include:

- Neptune Apex Lite Aquacontroller w/ EB-8 and Ph Probe
- Sunlight Supply Lumen Max Elite Mogul
- Radium Bulb
- Lumatek E-Ballast
- 36" T-5 supplement lighting.
- L.E.D moon lights

I will have pictures up when I get some free time.

Pics...

Sorry about the pictures. I haven't begun putting it together. I am going to start on Wednsday. Or possibly tomorrow. We are just finishing the stain on the stand. Then I will post a bunch of pictures once I get the stand to my house (It is at my father-n-laws house as he is helping me build it in his garage).

I should get the stand on thursday. Then I will have Friday - Saturday - and Sunday to get it built and up and running. Then I will leave my chiller connected to the large rubbermaid bin that I will have all my livestock in while the tank is cycling and stuff. I am going to go the New Age Aquatics and pick out some liverock that I will use for two pillars kind of like there display tank is.

From there I will be putting the rock in and letting the tank begin to cycle. I think it will go quick maybe a couple of days? Then I should be ready to put the livestock back in.

And so It begins!

So, I got the bug to get the ball rolling on my 73 build... here is what I've done so far...

So, some specs. about my new aquarium... the total approximate water volume of my system will be 90 US gallons. For my main pump I am using a Danner Mag 18, which will be placed in-sump as I won't have the room to plumb it outside. For in tank circulation I am going to use an Vortech Mp40w and possibly a Koralia 3 if I feel more is needed. I have a feeling that just the Mag 18 will provide enough water flow that I will not need anything additional. If this is the case I will probably sell or trade my Mp40, so look for that in the coming month or so.

As for lighting I have not yet decided if I am going to keep the current fixture that I have a 48" Current Nova Extreme Pro 6-bulb T5. Or, if I will switch it to all brand new lighting possibly 2 24" T5 supplements, and a Mogul 250w Radium bulb with a Sun Light Supply Lumen Elite Reflector and Running on a Lumatek Ballast. Either way, this can be determined later, if I do decide on the Radium, I will have my current 6 bulb fixture for sale if anyone is interested please let me know.

As for the actual dimensions of the tank, it is pretty easy the tank is 36" x 25" x 18.5" which equals some where in the neighborhood of about 70-75 gallons. I custom built my new aquarium cabinet and I am going to make a custom chiller box and hood which matches the cabinet. The front panel of the aquarium is Starfire optically clear glass, which for those of you who don't know what Starfire is...the glass is made with less iron, which in turn makes it much more clear when looking through it, it also tends to not have the traditional green hue normal pane glass has.

Here are a couple of pictures during the building process of my stand.

I would like to thank my father-N-law for helping me a ton and letting me borrow his garage for this build. These pictures don't show it, but we did put a bottom on the stand and all joints are wood glued as well as nailed. We used a nail gun to make the joints as clean as possible. Some of the joints didn't line up as we used poplar, which is known for bending when it is first cut, some of the boards were warped a little and this added to our small gaps and what not. It looks like they are huge as I had the camera on "macro" they really are not that large as, when the tank is on the stand you won't even see them. As for coloring the stand, I opted to stain the stand as if the stand gets water spots or whatever on it I can go ahead and stain it again and it will look back to normal. It will be stained a black brown to match our furniture in our house.

As for the other aspects and pieces of the aquarium not mentioned. It will be fully controlled by a Neptune Apex Lite Aquacontroller (THANKS TO THE GUYS AT NEW AGE AQUATICS) and I will be picking that up tomorrow. I also have a Reef Octopus Extreme 200 skimmer, with a PSK-2500 needle wheel pump on it. And an Aqua Euro 1/4hp chiller to control the cooling of the water.

As for plumbing I am going to hardline the over flow return to the sump and use spa flex and hose clamps to connect the tubing to the Mag 18. I will be using a custom designed standpipe, which was designed by NAA specifically for my tank. I will also connect a couple of valves to control the flow of the water incase the Mag 18 completely overwhelms my drainage in the overflow. I am also planing on using Loc-line with splitters to provide 4 different distribution angles for the return. Two will point down behind the rock and two will point out towards the front glass.

As for the rock layout. I am going to try and achieve a rock structure similar to the display at New Age Aquatics...

I really like the pillar look with mass loads to LPS on the bottom of the tank. I will be going bare bottom as I am sure many of you know I had a slight "Miscalculation" when taking the sand out of my current system, which resulted in a massive tank crash and me losing more than three fourths of my coral collection.

I think that is pretty much the low down of my new system. I will be starting to place and pick up the plumbing parts tomorrow (Fri) with the main build and trying to get water in it and flowing by Saturday. If you have any other ideas or see any flaws, please don't hesitate to let me know. I am spending an as my wife says ridiculous amount of money on this project. I want everything to go smooth and make it a great tank for my family and friends and all of you to enjoy.

Thanks! Hope you continue to follow along!

Cheers.

i was gonna say "dude your tank looks like the one at new age" :top:
Foselone - lol, it's there tank! Mine will be very similar as I am hoping gavin can help me with the rock structure. However, I think for now I am going to just put my older rock in the tank so that it can cycle and stuff.

Ryan - Almost I should hopefully have water in it tomorrow. I am going to plumb everything and make sure it is all on point and the way I like it. Then I will begin to roll.

Tank Completion With Photos...

So, today I finished my setup for the most part. It is currently running on only one of the Digital Aquatic PC4's as the other one has to be sent back to D.A. as it wasn't working when I got it out of the box.

Other than that I absolutely love the ReefKeeper Elite (Thanks to the guys at NAA) it is everything I want and more in a controller. I will be getting my PH probe hopefully tomorrow and once set will be able to monitor my pH actively. I love the amount of control I have over the system from one station. Just sitting in front of the controller head unit I am able to turn on the lights, turn off the lights, turn the actinics on only, turn on the other 3 bulbs only, turn off the main pump, turn on the main pump, turn off the skimmer etc.... it is a big feat for me, considering before I had to go in to the stand unplug each plug and blah blah blah. An Aquacontroller is definitely worth every penny. Took me only a couple hours to set up completely!

As for everything else, all my livestock is back in the aquarium. As much as I used to disagree with people on Starfire glass. I have to say, it does make all the difference in the world. It is so much more clear compared to my regular glass tank I had before. All the fish are already active and swiming around checking out there new home, which is much bigger for them compared to my old tank (36x24x14.5) versus the new (36x25x18.5). So, with our further ado I give you my new system...

Full Tank Shot long...

Full Tank Shot wide...

Not sure what this chalice is?

And the Controller...

And the Sump...

I WOULD LIKE TO THANK MY FATHER IN LAW FOR ALL HIS HELP AND CONSTRUCTION KNOWLEDGE. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK A FEW OF THE LOCAL FISH STORES THAT HELPED ME MAKE THINGS HAPPEN: NEW AGE AQUATICS, CAPISTRANO REEF, SOCALTROPICALFISH OUTLET. MOST IMPORTANT I WOULD LIKE TO THANK MY WIFE FOR PUTTING UP WITH ALL MY BULLSHIT, WHILE THIS PROJECT WAS UNDERWAY. THANKS EVERYONE!!!!

Hope you enjoy... Let me know if you have any questions.

wow nice!! Love the stand...corals looking nice too!
Thanks, my father in law and I build the stand from scratch. As for the corals I found a little trick in my photo editing program. Makes them look exactly the color that you would see, in my display!

Next, I need to figure out the durso it is very loud. I might have to make my own, as I think I have too much flow going through the one that was provided with the aquarium.
