While participating in productive procrastination from homework, an idea crawled into my head. Has anyone considered, or successfully operated a reef aquarium outside (backyard) in Southern California? I have experienced it before at the Waikiki aquarium where the have a clam propagation tank outside. The only problem I can find is the temperature fluctuations in California are greater than the weather in Hawaii. A bad*** chiller and heater would be required for the tank. Other than possible falling debris, any other concerns? Most likely no fish, just coral so local racoons or cats are not tempted to go fishing.

Steve Garrett comes to mind. If you look him up in Google search "Garrett's Acropolis" you may find out more info on his outdoor tank.

Steve Garrett still has it and Cymaster had a 500g setup. The one at waikiki gets constant filtered ocean water and the weather is always 86F so temp is never an issue. After reading Cy's endeavor, it was pretty hard and the investment was huge. It was pretty bada$$ though.

It was fun- I had to take it down since the acrylic came undone on one of the corners. I enjoyed having it, cooling it and heating it despite all of the insulation and measures still cost $$$ because I lived inland and not in a nicer climate area (like steve G) His house is always 10-15 degrees cooler in the summer, and 10-15 degrees warmer in the winter than mine.

Thank you so much for the link for your build! Going to read through it tonight. If I am going to set up a tank outside, it would be small (5-15 gallon), shallow tank for growing SPS.

Yeah that's probably not going to work....... You need a big tank to avoid fluctuations. It wouldn't even be worth the hassle to keep a small tank stable

Evaporation and temperature swings will be a big issue with a tank that small. Or you will have to spend big $$$ for really high grade insulation.

That would be seriously tough and a pretty big investment to keep it stable. Unless you want to run some serious heating and an oversized chiller, ATO and many water changes just from airborne crap coming in constantly. But hey if you do it I'll be sub'd to your thread
