Powerheads… What are you using?

I have been using MP10/40s for almost 10 years and I think it is time to make the switch. My wet sides just don’t last anymore.

What is everyone using? And are you happy with the flow?

All MP10s/40s for me -- super easy to clean and "Look ma, no wires!" :)

You can always swap out the wet side, which I have extras. Just swap out, put into vinegar bath, and brush the darn thing off the next day.

I have almost every powerhead right now but my favorite by far are the ai nero. Not super expensive, super quiet and best part, easiest powerhead to clean I have ever owned.

I have 4 Tunze running currently and one gyre. Tunze's are 99% of what I have used for 25 plus years. The gyre is my newest addtion and i have to say it requires a lot more maintaince than my Tunze. The flow it produces it obviously different.

Tunze, MP40's and gyres (maxspect). If Tunze made a gyre/laminar flow pump, they would be my choice.
The Reef Octo's look pretty nice, but they're not cheap. The new cloud edition gyres seem pretty cool and I might upgrade my 330's once they release the upgrade kit. I think you can hide one of your Tunze's in the corner and it would give you plenty of flow for your tank.

I agree Tunze's are just workhorses and great engineering behind it. They are just a little bulky compared to the others.

I'm using MP40's and Reefwave Gyre, they are all good...just what kind of flow and how much maintenance you want to do. The ability to swap out the MP40's wetside and dunking it into vinegar bath and no wires inside tank is pretty sweet.

Same sentiment. Tunze are just tanks. They just run. And run……. And keep running.

Pair of Tunze 6105 paired with 2 MP40s on the 180. Had this mashup for years. 6105s push the water. MP40s are just fun to play with.

Tunze for 20+ years because they are great and Roger

If my tunzes ever wear out, i would consider reef octopus.

Broken pair of xf330 gyres--one works great, other clicks and stops seconds after turning it on, sadly. Careful who you buy from.

2 tunze 6095s and 2 ai nero 5s. i've also used jebaos and other tunzes and reef octopus octopulse pumps and they're all pretty fine tbh. the tunzes are tanks, they'll probably never die. the neros get dirty and need cleaning, but they're really easy to clean. the octopulse pumps were great, but i had 4s and they were too strong for my tank size. great pumps tho

That happened to my used Reefwave gyre, and I thought I was screwed because I bought it from someone online. But take the gyre and remove the 2 ends and disassemble the blades, and soak it overnight in citric acid bath or vinegar...and worked like new afterwards. Give it a shot.

I'm running 3 gyre xf350s and a Tunze 6105. My original xf150 came with spare cages and blades, they don't anymore. That's the only draw back since they need to be cleaned so regularly to keep flow output. Once I buy some spare cages/blades, they'll be one of my favorite pumps. Love their flow. I'm controlling them with that hydros wave controller, so I can't speak to the actual maxspect control.

The Tunze is a workhorse and great directional flow. Only draw back is cleaning.

I had the same exact problem. One set didnt work when i turned it on. Just like Jimbo mentioned, it worked again after i disassembled and soaked overnight in citric acid.

I principally rely upon Vortechs (40s and 60s) for flow, as they seem to last a very long time and if you have spare wetsides, they're very convenient to clean without taking offline for hours at a time.

I have a couple gyres, and I find that they (a) move a lot of water and (b) are very effective to agitate the surface in a display when mounted horizontally, but their effectiveness seems to diminish a lot faster than Vortechs as grime accumulates.

I'm trying a Nero for the time time in my frag tank/sump, and it's been really great so far. I would strongly consider Nero's for a display tank given their smaller footprint relative to Vortechs.

I love having my gyres and MP40's controlled with the wave engine (ETM version), it's great to have all of them in sync together under one controller. The key to gyres, as mentioned earlier, is having extra impellers and cages to swap out for cleaning. It takes less than 5 minutes to swap both pump's cages, etc. I even bought an extra 330 when CoralVue was discounting them for $80. I wish that Tunze would make a Stream 3, but smaller, somewhere in between the 6040 and Stream 3. It would be nice if they just made a laminar flow pump and ruin the competition.
