My Tank Build
#2
I buy quarantined fish from Dr. Reef's. Don't quarantine coral, just dip them. Almost all of my CUC comes from ReefCleaners, which hopefully come from tanks without fish in them.

Quarantine all fish, and corals now. Now my success rate is really high. I used to kill everything trying to quarantine. lol

I QT all fish, whether I do it myself or I purchase them from Adam at Ocean Devotion. Corals get throughly dipped and frag plugs go bye, bye. I would QT or hold/observe all CUC, especially from Reef Cleaners (which is where I got pyramid snails from). I never use to QT CUC, just acclimate and go, but after battling pyramids for a year, that won't happen again. Clams will go into a QT/observation tank first and any signs of pests will be eliminated there and I can treat for PMD if needed before going in with other clams. Wild caught clams can wreak havoc on established cultured clams, so know your source. You're just rollin' the dice if you don't QT or observe at minimum. I treat every animal as if they came from an infested tank/system, it's much easier going forward with that mentality, then it is going blindly and trusting someone's word.
But hey, you can do whatever you feel comfortable with, so there's no right or wrong here, just personal preference and experience will guide you.

i sorta kinda don't really qt acros anymore, but i do make sure to remove them from the frag plugs and preferably i don't buy any that have dead skin on it. qting acros for ~2 months is hard lol

non-acros i'd still qt, i just haven't bought any in a long time

cuc i still qt forever despite source. fwiw places like reefcleaners don't keep them in systems with fish, but they get them right out of the ocean so..

fish i qt myself or buy from online qt places. some of which i still observe for awhile before adding. TSM for example doesn't have a post copper observation period, so if i ordered from them i'd observe for a couple weeks at least. better safe than sorry

I started reef keeping summer of 2020, I didn't qt cause I mainly followed inappropriate reefer and he didn't qt never had issues so I thought I'd be fine. Maybe a month or 2 in, I got hit with brook or velvet so I qted all fish. Fish came back and didnt have an issue for months until one day I got a frag (lps), and I got velvet again. So I don't think removing plug woulda mattered since tomonts can encrust on lps skeleton. Fast forward, I got a bigger tank. Was doing good for a bit and idk how it happened but I got velvet again. So had to qt everything again, lost a lot of fish. I added all the corals/inverts I wanted in this fallow period. Now a days I find it hard adding anything new thats not sps, since I can cut the plug and glue them in. I dont have the patience or time to have another running tank to wait at least 6 weeks to add to my tank but obviously its an investment compared to what I have in my tank already.

Only made this post cause Im currently qting another batch of fish but Im so lazy in doing so but I know that I should be doing it.

This is my biggest issue with learning via forums or YT, there's no vetting the info and you're basing your entire tank off a complete stranger without really knowing what their experience is or if they know what they're doing in the first place. This is why books will always be an invaluable source for the hobby, except people don't read anymore because they are impatient or they just don't know where to start. You can buy so many books used online now, that for the price of an overpriced coral, you can have all of the right information in your hands. I find those channels interesting and entertaining, but I would never do what half of them do. Reef Therapy and Reef Beef are both awesome podcasts/shows for all, no matter what your experience level is and if you're in to sticks, then Abe (Coral Euphoria) is another great source, as well as Keith (Reefbum).

I QT all my fish that go into my tanks. When I didn't QT in the past, I've had the terrible experience of losing all my fish in 2 different tanks to velvet. It's heartbreaking and puts your on a edge of quitting the hobby when something like that happens. I didn't know what velvet was, sadly I found out the hard way.

It's ALOT of work to do it yourself and it's costly to pay someone to do it for you. One thing is for certain, once you do it yourself, you'll have new found respect for QT'd fish. LOL At least I do.

Exactly! That's why I never flinch at the cost of truly QT'd fish, because it takes weeks to a month of proper QT to ensure the fish is "clean". I never understood why someone would go cheap on a fish when they spent thousands on their system, only to watch it crash and burn because they didn't want to spend a little more money.

I QT all fish that are not CB. I dip corals, I don't QT them.

I QT my inverts in a strange way when I start a tank. After the snails/crabs go in I just have snails and crabs in the tank for the first 11 weeks. Gives any parasites time to die, and is actually kinda fun learning to appreciate the little guys.

fish qt does legit suck, right now i'm qting a copperband and a bangaii cardinal. things were going smoothly, they finished copper no problem, put them in an observation tank, finished deworming, but then.. the bangaii stopped eating. fast forward a week and now the copperband has decided to join him. they were eating great, so something is wrong, but it's just guesswork at best for what it is. brook (not something on my general radar since i don't qt clowns)? internal uronema (had them for like 7+ weeks so how would it pop up now)? bacterial (where i was leaning but who knows)? so i started doing cipro baths, but humblefish said i should just do kanaplex and metroplex, so now i'm started on 10-14 days of that shit

tl;dr: fish QT sucks and paying someone else to do it is almost always worth every penny

that being said, it's all totes worth if you can get:
