So I will be tearing down my tank because I'm moving next month. I'm planning on upgrading from a 40G to a 100G and I want to use the tank water I already have. I'm about to do a water change and I was wondering if I can save the old water to use in the new tank. Good idea? bad idea? will the water go bad from bacteria die off? I would be storing it in 5 gallon jugs.

I used everything from my old set up for new upgrade, water was in containers for about 2 days but it was very cold and had to heat water up before I transferred over livestock which took about another day before I transferred livestock all fish are fine and healthy isn't loose anything

id just test the water for nitrates before and after before adding to new tank, most of the bacteria is gonna be in the live rock not so much in the water...

me too. Sand and all and then threw all the livestock in a couple hours after. Just wondering if there will be any problems because I will have to store the water for about 2 months

Two months might be a problem only because the bacteria will probably die in the jugs , your better off starting fresh ... My two cents

Bacteria will only survive with a food source. Doubt you'll gain much saving water for that period of time.. Unless Ammonia is the ultimate goal....
Start fresh, and go from there... My 4....... That's twice as good as 2...

You would be reusing 40% of the new volume so it is essentially a 60% water change. Probably not a problem. I think checking params now is less important than before adding livestock.

I dumped my old water in my upgrade but kept the rock and never recorded a cycle but a spike in algae growth indicated there was stuff breaking down on the new rock. Even with aged rock, I would let the tank run without livestock for at least a week to be sure all is good and that life support works.

I saved my water for about two weeks in a bin with a heater and pump to keep the water moving. I had only about 20 gallons... It worked out well for me...
