I just started hearing a loud buzzing noise coming from my tank... I went to check and it seemed like it was coming from the skimmer... I tried jiggling it to see if I could get it to stop out if it would muffle the sound... no change at all so I thought maybe it was actually coming from something else so I proceeded to investigate those possibilities... I wasn't having any luck so I was back to the skimmer... I covered the air intake with my finger and the buzzing stopped! I took my finger off and the buzzing did not return.

What was causing the buzzing sound? Should I be concerned? It seems strange to me that just briefly covering the air intake would stop whatever it was from continuing.

I should also note that the skimmer was working normally and well before, during, and after the buzzing.

May u had salt creep in the intake and it was whistling or vibrating.

OMG I lol'd... not sure why... :p
And if I didn't get an answer I was gonna start texting you, lol.

But really... would salt creep cause it to start buzzing LOUDLY all of the sudden? It was not a whistling sound by any means. I mean I was laying in bed and heard it start out of no where... it was loud like something was seriously wrong! Then finger over the hole for 2 seconds and the noise stopped. Salt creep for realz?!?

Y isn't this locked yet. Lazy mod!

Ok just thinking the salt that creeps up the air intake may constrict the amount of air that can enter the impeller manifold. Witch causes the pump to work harder. Then vibrate. It's rocket science. Lol

Grrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It IS working great! I swear you guys don't read half of what I post. Typical! I should've just asked my husband... I would've gotten about the same responses from him. Lol

I agree Eric, you do get what you pay for. I have had a lot of problems with this skimmer. I wish my stand was tall enough so I could fit my big CAD Lights skimmer under there but it won't be long and I can get rid of this one.....

Skimmers IME fail with the impeller or it's a dirty air line. Sometimes just a smack gets em going. I have been blessed with a work horse that just needs a thorough vinegar bath about every year to be fine tuned. Gotta love BK's

YES I blame you! You should listen to everything women have to say! We wouldn't say it if it weren't important!!! Lol

It sounded to me like maybe a tiny collonista snail was in the impeller or something. It was loud! I really don't think it was anything to do with the airline being dirty. Definitely sounded more like an impeller problem or even the pump motor to me. Either way, it was still skimming great and is quiet again now. Maybe it stopping when I covered the air intake was just a coincidence and whatever was in the impeller came out at that time.

Oh yeah, and if only we were all financially blessed enough to afford a BK! :p

Something was probably lodged in the pump. Had the same thing happen to me. Pulled the pump apart and cleaned it and the noise stopped.
Yeah I have a lot of collonista and stomatella snails in the skimmer, I think one of them probably got stuck in the pump and the impeller was hitting it as it turned and it made the sound.
