SPS suddenly not extending

All of a sudden some of my SPS don't seem to be extending their polyps. There are only two things I can think of. Last week I had a temperature spike (84 degrees, no chiller). I also bought two small fish. One just hid and died a couple of days later. The other, a yellow gumdrop goby, is doing fine but it likes to stay perched in a large colony of green acro. Occasionally it will bounce around to other SPS corals but tends to stay in the acro the most. The temp has been back to normal but I haven't seen much of a change. All other parameters are in check. Do you think it's the temp or the goby that caused the problem? Or, do you think it might be something else? It seems like it happened overnight and has been this way for about a week.

I thought for the most part goby's were pretty safe but I've read this one can be a nuisance. Shane on me for not researching. It doesn't appear to nip at anything at all. I tried unsuccessfully to get it out to see if it makes a difference. I guess I'll give it another shot.

While it may not nip at your SPS, it may be laying on it, causing the polyps to retract. I had a yellow clown goby around acans, and he would always be on top of the acans, not letting it open up fully.

Yeah good point I was thinking about that after I posted last night.

Well I finally nabbed him so we'll see if that was the problem. How warm will you let your tank get? I'm thinking without a chiller I might have an issue during the summer. I'm going to say the temp will hover between 80-82. Is it tolerable?

You can try running a fan if you don't want to run a chiller. It will help a bit with the hot temperatures in August.

I know you said all other params seem to be in check but since we are talking about sps here, what are your nitrates & phosphates testing at? How long was the new fish in there after he died before you removed him? Just got me thinking when I was replying to someone else's thread that is having a similar problem.
