So the last week, I've been too lazy and busy to fill up my ATO, so I had crazy evaporation. Yesterday, I did a water change and then decided to fill the rest of the sump with RO/DI to make up for the past evaporation. Well, I stupidly set the ATO to ON and forgot it overnight. So basically, the sump was almost filled with water and when the autofeeder turned on, it turned off the return and made the sump overflow. Luckily, I had my Apex leak detector programmed to alert me of leaks. So at 10 this morning, I got an email from my Apex saying the switch was closed. I ran to the den where my tank is and saw a mess of water on the floor. My ATO was running since last night and must have dumped a good 10 gallons of RO/DI in my sump, but it didn't spill until the return shut off.
So, the leak happened, but luckily, it only happened for a few minutes after the Apex sent me an email. I'm now rethinking my programming to send me an email when my second ATO float switch is CLOSED in case I mistakenly set my ATO to ON to make up the evaporation. Then I can be alerted if the water gets any higher than the second switch and catch it in time.
Anyway, if anyone is hessitating on buying an Apex, I hope you take this situation into consideration and realize how much worse it could have gotten if I didn't get an alarm notice sooner.
