I had 2 scarlet reef hermits... Only fish are 3 green chromis and a red Fire Goby.
other inhabitants are margarita and astrea snails and an emerald crab.
One of my hermits is doing his job, picking and eating...
Hadn't seen the other one in a couple days... his shell is upside down and empty... Have probably 20+ empty shells for them in the tank. I have searched high and low and I cannot find him...
Emerald crab doesn't bother anyone, and has plenty of food...
Any ideas???

I've had them for a month... floated their bag for a good 30 minutes, then dripped them for another 30, picked them out of the bag/water and dropped them in the tank. Been very healthy and active since...

Hermit crabs moult like shrimp and lobsters, but they need larger shells to move into. If you don't have any larger shells lying around in your tank they will die because they can't live outside of their shells for long. Just as a rule of thumb about 10% of them die each month anyway. Hope this helps. Good thing they are inexpensive

LOL... found it.
I must have 25 or 30 shells of assorted size in there.
I just saw a HUGE shell, probably the biggest one in there moving on top of a rock... I was like WTF???
he is still tiny and was in a cerith shell... now, you can barely see the end of 2 legs sticking out of that huge shell... Guess he needed a triple wide

Here's pics...
first is his old shell... about the length of 2 dimes side by side...
2nd is him on top of the rock... the shell is huge... about the size of a half dollar...
3rd is the other hermit in his original Margarita snail shell on top of the Nudi infested Monti (to be removed tomorrow when I do my water change)

Oh yeah... the bright green on the rocks isn't slimy and doesn't wipe off... is coralline ever green, or only purple?

He decided the triple wide was too big last night...
Those guys look CREEPY out of their shells!
him and the other scarlet hermit kind of had a shoving contest after he was out, so I dropped another shell by him that was about half way between the size of the ex shell and the triple wide... He crawled right in, but lost a leg in the shoving match...
doesn't seem any worse for the wear... still wandering around picking at rocks...
