I guess it's some type of nuisance algae, although it doesn't look like algae at all. It is all over the rocks that I got with the 240g upgrade along with bryopsis and some nasty, furry stuff, maybe GHA but not long and not bright green (dark swamp green almost slate colored).

I would like to know what it is and if you know what I can do to get rid of it. I have two large coolers with all the rock in them with a heater and power head. One is rock only so no light is needed but the other one has coral. I have taken some of the small rocks covered in polyps out and did a hydrogen peroxide dip, successfully getting rid of the bryopsis and "fur" however I know I can't dip LPS and SPS in hydrogen peroxide so I'm not sure what I should do for those rocks.
Also, I'm not sure if the hydrogen peroxide dip will get rid of the coarse white stuff. The rocks I dipped and put in my dt did not have any of that on them.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I had that on some rocks that came from a very old all in one tank.

Heres the nifty trick on how you get rid Of em:
Once I broke it down, I sold em all and did not add any of that crap to my tank.

The end, you're welcome, good night

Very helpful. :sarcastic: Thanks Esteban.
I will likely get rid of some of the rocks but others I would really like to use since they're nice pieces. If getting rid of them is the only solution then so be it but I hope a reef nerd sees this that knows a solution and can offer it up....

looks like dead worms to me. do any of them show any feathers? I have them all over the lower rocks and substrate in my tank except they have feathers. As far as I know they are good...filter feeders. my tank has been up for over 5 years. I don't worry about them. Check out your sponge. another filter feeder. after awhile they can smother your acros. Don't know if there is anything you can do except have aggressive acros to keep them in control. You are in a "new" ballgame now that you have a larger capacity tank. love your tank build. Good Luck

I have those tiny feather duster tubes under my rocks in my 70g as well. But these are not those. I really am pretty sure this is some type of plant maybe even decaying plant material. Idk. They are not tubes.

Thanks Robert but I can't really answer any of your questions. This rock was in the 240g tank I bought. I didn't notice it till after we were home cuz the lights were off when we were breaking down the tank.
The guy sold his setup because he was having really serious health problems and couldn't maintain it for quite some time. I'm sure his params were all screwed up. He had lost his 2 gigantic clams and all his corals except frogspawn, torch, and softies. And the GHA and bryopsis was nasty.
Anyhow, I would like to be able to use sold of the rocks when I aquascape the 240 but only if I'm able to get rid of this ugly stuff without having to manually pull it off piece by piece and am sure it won't spread once in the new tank.

I put some of the rocks with polyps and shrooms that were infested with GHA and bryopsis in my 70g and dipped them in hydrogen peroxide first. It went away and never returned. :)

The rest of the rock is still sitting in large coolers with heaters and power heads in my kitchen. And t5's over the cooler that has corals in it.
