So since I've been researching tangs for the past few months to determine which I want in my tank. I started questioning, how big are these getting in hobbyists tanks? I see on site descriptions that this tang grows to "X" and that one grows to "Y". Is this "wild" size or "captive" size? So I thought I'd ask you. Do you have an LARGE tang in your tank? If so how large is it and how long have you had it?
The largest that I have personally seen is Steve Garrett's monster Vlamingi Tang. But that's in an 20 foot tank. Does anyone else have a monster in their tank?

Have you seen the ones at the aquarium? They're huge! They had all the fish that you shouldn't buy because they get to big for most tanks. I've seen Steve's fish and it's big, but seeing 10 that size swimming together is even crazier

Biggest ones in tanks I see are the vlamingis. Snorkeling in HI though I've seen some huge Nasos 18" plus. I think its rare to see a tang over 12" in a tank. Bada$$ though when you do!

Yeah I've seen Chads, it's pretty big too. I want to see if anyone has grown a monster from a baby in their system. For instance I'd love a Blonde Naso but they can get up to 18 inches! But I've never seen one that big that wasn't at a commercial aquarium. How big do they get in a home tank is what I'm trying to figure out. The same goes for any tang that can get over 12 inches.

Come on peeps I know someone has a monster. Don't worry the tang police won't come get you......yet

Check out "Happy Fish Pets" in Brea. They have some GIANT tangs and various other fish. They have a huge display in the middle of the store with various rare and big tangs :)

I should specify, I mean who has a tank at home 400 gallons and below with a big tang. I've gone diving with the monsters of the sea.

I don't want a 12 inch tang breaking my pretty sticks trying to turn around in my tank. LOL if I could get one to stay around 8-10 inches then maybe.

Guy on RC had 2 in his 400g for 8 years until they died. One was 13" long. so I guess if you plan to keep the naso for a few years it can outgrow the 225.

+1,bigdaddystar has a naso that is 12in in a 180 with other large tangs ranging from 8in+ n a large h.tusk too. So 225g you'll have plenty of monster...
That's a big a$$ fish!! Maybe if I had FOWLR but not that much room in my reef

I read that thread and there was another guy that had a 500 or 600 gallon tank and said that he felt the fish was cramped. That's insane!!

Ok blonds are off my experiment list with the vlamingi's.

Yep it came originally from Toromps buddy. Then to him, then to me, then he would crop the crop out of my tank so I sold him to BDS. Great Tang and great mannerisms for a big fish.

IME you can have a blond, we have the same exact tank.
I have a female and she's cool as can be. It's around 5.5-7" long. At around 10" I will pass her on to a larger system or at least one with less rock work. That fish is fine in my system. She doesn't dart a lot, well not like the Sohal. Now that thing really could enjoy some room. The surgeon style tangs over 7.5" probably would benefit from a bigger tank but will do fine in a 225 with lots to nibble and great water flow.

Check out tanks at Rainforest cafe in Anaheim to show you what happens when fish don't eat well and don't have good algae to feed on off of live rock.

Wow these are true tank monsters. I don't want to have to get rid of a fish after a few years. 300+ gallon tanks and the fish still can't turn around lol. I don't have room for a larger tank so I'll stick with the small guys.
