Are the spears gate valves even worth the money? I can ones similar to their economy versions- $15 for 1 1/2". I can put unions on either side to remove and replace if necessary.

Its hard for me to justify spending $400 on just this part of the plumbing.

I'm currently looking at-

hipco.com (Harrington)
flexpvc.com
supplyhouse.com
bulkreefsupply.com
If you are going to use gate valves, they go with the Spears. I don't know why you want schedule 80 unions though...The only things I wouldn't skimp on are a) Spears gate valves and b) Spears schedule 80 bulkheads (talk to Aaron). Everything I use schedule 40.

Thy DO make gray spray paint.... One minute white schedule 40, 5 mins later BOOM gray schedule 40.

I wouldn't skimp on valves. Every other connector, schedule 40. With the exception of the return, there isn't sufficient pressure to warrant schedule 80.....

But what the hell do I know, my budget went out the window day 1

Its a one time purchase. I have a feeling that you will regret it down the road if you compromise just to save a $2-300 dollars. (I regretted it a bit when looking at my ugly plumbing)

I've painted PVC before, it ends up getting scratched.

I think I will regret it, and don't want to have to do this again! I'm just running out of tank funds... but I'm at the final stretch.

I have to agree, this hobby is so **** expensive. Don't even ask me how much money I spent on my saltwater mix station with plumbing. As soon as I went Sch80 the price sky rocketed with the Cepex ball valves.
That is the last thing on my list. Why this build is taking me so long.
