You feeding 4x a day to try and keep it from scavenging your expensive stuff? It's not necessary for them right?

Also why would it get a taste for clams even if you fed it clams? Isn't that like saying feeding it shrimp will give it a taste for your cleaners and peppers?

MI has a high metabolism. On another link I read, small frequent feedings were recommended as they have small stomachs and high metabolism.

Regarding the clams it was for cbb; if they get used to eating out of clam shells, they may eat any maximas within the tank

Ok. I don't have a cbb yet but do have a large clam so just wondering. I think someone at some point said something about feeding clams then they would eat the clams in the tank. Just checking.

nice progress!

as this is a long term effort (hopefully the MI lives for years), be prepared to increase filtration and experiment with other foods, even live coral to keep this guy alive.

remember, for most people after 2-3 months the problem wasnt getting them to eat enough calories, but that they didnt get the right nutrient and died suddenly.

you mention "increased filtration", in what regards to you mean? I have an aquamaxx coneS Co3 skimmer, and a sump full of live rock. I also add pods to my sump and DT every month or so after lights go out.

as for corals...I suppose buying cheap acans isn't a bad idea long-term, since its candy to the Moorish Idol.

Calorie content: i contribute to another MI thread off another forum, where I also document my progress; apparently they *NEED* algae. Some recommended algae is the Julian Sprungs algae sheets, as well as Nori. I add nori to the tank every other day. However seeing that the MI is now eating the New Era Algae grazer discs, I'm hoping that'll supplement its nutritional needs.

im just saying that MI zanclus cornutus is technically a carnivore, with a diet of benthic microalgae, sponges, seasquirts, bryozoa. this and the increased daily feeding might tax your existing filtration more than a bunch of herbivores and planktivores, putting more stress on the coral.

in terms of algae, compared to tangs which have built-in knives on them, MI comes bare-handed to the fight.

ah OK, I got you. As it stands my usual maintenance is 30g weekly WCs given the high bioload I have in my tank (22 fish). Most of the feedings are in the way of algae grazers or pellets dropped in 4x a day; one a day I feed some frozen.

So my moorish which my wife named Morris. Creative I know. He's now grazing on nori and is now eating pellets soaked in seachem reef plus. A great supplement for fish and corals. Like a multivitamin I guess but hopefully it helps his dorsal grow back.

John who are your tank mates for the moorish? And aggression from others? The moorish seems docile and my Beat up YT is trying to assert dominance but it is only a 40gal corner so that could be an issue.

Well that's great news. keep vigilant. I hear that the first couple months make or break the idol.

As for tank mates:
One 1.5" blue tang
One 1.5" chevron tang
1 foxface (which will be rehomed once I get back home)
4 flame wrasses (1 supermale to 3 female)
2 leopards
2 potters wrasses
1 filamentous wrasse
1 yellow Coris wrasse
1 labouti wrasse
1 lineatus wrasse
1 black leopard wrasse
1 cbb
1 longnose hawkfish
2 clowns

I haven't noticed any aggression. How do your MI and yellow tang compare in size?

Both about the same perhaps Morris is bigger. Around 3" in length each. But what size is your tank? Again those two are in a 40gal corner tank. It's more chasing and "tail slapping" no nipping.

I figured but it's a "hospital" tank until they grow fins back. They'll learn to be together I hope. I just think putting a "injured" fish in the 150 display will make it more prone to being picked on by my bigger fish the hippo, sailfin and convict tangs.

It's hard to say how your other tangs will react to the MI and yellow tang. But getting them healthy before intro should help. But I'm not an expert by any means.

You said your MI got a taste for acans right? You notice him eating anything else? I picked up a clam awhile ago and I think it had a Mojano nem on it and there were probably 5 or 6 as of yesterday and I saw mine pick at one of them. I didn't feed him last night and now this morning there are 0 Mojano in the tank. I'm assuming it was the MI that ate them but is that even possible? They wouldn't sting? What about a bubble tip is that not safe anymore?
