I had my heart set on a 36x24x24 but seller decided to keep it so I had to find the next best thing...

Gotta love craigslist, found a great deal on this 36x24x20 rimless 3 sided starphire tank and picked it up 30 minutes later..seller says its a 2 year old leemar but is there really any way to tell for sure?? Whatever

--

Fast forward to now, got everything set up except a permant light/lightstand and either another mp10 or a single mp40 (or other controllable pump)

More pics of before and equipment to come but here's a FTS :D

Current equipment:
36x24x20 rimless starphire
36x18x18 sump
250w MH pendant
Mp10
Apex lite
SWC extreme mini s skimmer
Mag 12

I got too excited and moved my purple tang over from my fowlr first, then chevron, big mistake....

Couldn't get to them fast enough...can't believe how fast it did so much damage to the chevron. They lived peacefully for some time now so I didn't much of it, granted I did add the chevron way earlier in the fowlr. Guess I shouldn't be adding more than 1 tang in such a small tank anyway lol.

So far there is a Picasso clown, ora neon dottyback, 6line (surprisingly docile), and the monster PT. No other issues so far...but its just starting lol

This is my third reef tank in like 6 months lol..started with a 29 biocube, thinking my tang tank will suffice as far as size. Then to a 50 cube with the same mentality but as you guys can see that didn't work out so well. I'm thinking this one will be enough for awhile though, especially cause of the big sump which I really like lol.

My old 50g (SC aquariums)

You guys must think I'm strange I keep upgrading even though my tanks so empty but I really like to see my fish happy along with corals lol so the more room and total volume the better!

Nice aquascape!

I go from normal to pico, starting with 50g FOWLR, then 24g reef tank (I didn't know better but work out OK), got a 5g exopico for wife. Now I'm building a 50g cube....

Been a little bust this week so my bad for lagging it on the pictures, ill have em up soon since its the weekend lol

question, I only have around 40 lbs of live rock in my tank, those pieces weighed really light and I picked up 30 lbs from another reefer on here, and I added roughly 10 lbs from my old tank for a total of 40. There isn't much room for me to add more of my old rocks in here so I was wondering if the weight of the rocks really mattered, or if the ~1.5-2lbs per gallon was just a rough estimate to fit the size of the tank? so is my 40 lbs enough for a proper biological filter? I also have a fuge section in my sump that is around 18x18x18 with a 5 inch DSB, it will eventually be closer to 7-8 inches but I didn't get enough sand.

edit: i guess i could stack them up higher but i would rather not if i didnt have to lol

I think its more about surface area vs density of the rock. My 50 gal has about 15-20 lbs of LR in the DT but I loaded the sump with as much LR rubble that I could to make up for the light load in the DT.

Your fine with that much rock, if you can put some LR in ur huge sump. I'd leave ur live rock alone in ur tank, it looks really good. Too much rock all stacked to the top makes the tank look smaller IMO.

cool i see so ill just throw some more rocks into the sump lol or i was planning on making a sort of pico tank out of the fuge and put a reef lobster or small mantis in there and rearrange the rocks so its neat, any thoughts/suggestions for that?

Hahahh it might even be less then 3 months if i come across a good deal

some pics of the sump:

Had to take off one of the side boards of the stand to fit in the sump, still thinking how i can reattach it securely, and also be able to take it off easily.

after looking at it again i realized the fuge is more like 18x18x14 since the water doesnt go all the way up lol

My temp probe and digital thermometer are showing 2 different temperatures that are off by around 2.2 degrees, any idea which is the accurate one lol....i need to go get me a regular alcohol/mercury thermometer...
