When first starting up a tank and cycling it you will see yucky stuff all sorts of red slime and algae which is common and will go away over time.

Quarantine and treat all your new fish with ich meds like coppermine and/or hypo
salinity them for at least 6 weeks in a seperate hospital tank if your planning to do reef bc catching them out of a reef tank is a pain.

You can never over skim there is no such thing as over skimming

6-8 hours a day for light more light means more algae

The best thing is to ask a question when in doubt. you will get many answers but there is no easy way out. take your time and you tank will grow with life....:)
