Two years after losing all my SPS and LPS from when I first started my tank, I still wondered what killed them. I was convinced that I didn't do enough water changes at the time or that my calcium reactor needed tweaking. And up until this day, I never knew why all my coral died. Well, I just found out today!
After reading Emac's thread on rust and magnets I went and found my old Two Little Fishies Veggie Clip and I opened up the magnet and here is what I found:
I had no idea the thing was rusting from the inside. I only replaced it when the clip broke. I replaced it with a newer version of this magnet, but now I'm wondering if they're even safe to use. So when your corals start dying, be sure to check your magnets for rust! Magnet cleaners, impellers, everything!
This isn't a new phenomenon, its happened to many people here, but we could always use another reminder!
