Two years after losing all my SPS and LPS from when I first started my tank, I still wondered what killed them. I was convinced that I didn't do enough water changes at the time or that my calcium reactor needed tweaking. And up until this day, I never knew why all my coral died. Well, I just found out today!

After reading Emac's thread on rust and magnets I went and found my old Two Little Fishies Veggie Clip and I opened up the magnet and here is what I found:

I had no idea the thing was rusting from the inside. I only replaced it when the clip broke. I replaced it with a newer version of this magnet, but now I'm wondering if they're even safe to use. So when your corals start dying, be sure to check your magnets for rust! Magnet cleaners, impellers, everything!

This isn't a new phenomenon, its happened to many people here, but we could always use another reminder!

Yeah dude same here. I gave my tunze wave box a good cleaning last week and found the magnet for the pump rusting inside.

A mfg told me before to be cautious. No matter how well the magnets are sealed after 2 years theyre very likely to rust.

Really tho? Change all your pumps or anything with a magnet every 2 years? Thats Expensive.

That sucks man. I love Tunze products too. I was just amazed that it took me so long to figure out why all my coral died years ago. I really thought I was messing up royally, but it turned out it was all this rust leeching into my water was the reason my stuff STN'd.

The new magnets look better sealed, but I don't know if I want to take a chance.

Those TLF veggie clips are notorious for rusting out. Don't leave any magnets in your tank if they don't need to be in there, I take my cleaning magnets out every time.

Ofcourse they arent going to accept blame.

I wasn't expecting them to accept the blame that I lost all my coral because of a rusty magnet, but the least they could have done was accept that they designed and manufactured a faulty product. They didn't even admit to that. They just said, "Oh, well, rusty magnets isn't the likely reason you lost all your shiiiet." I replied to them and I hope they have scientific research on that if they're gonna throw it in my face. But I don't expect a response. Haha =]

Magnets are a short term solution and a long term probability of problems. I had a Neptune dosing tube (??) holder that rusted oiut in less than 4 months. Same as everybody else telling horror stories of losing SPS. My corals started receding/dying and no real reason as to why. Then I discovered the orange back plate of the tube holder floating in my sump. The rusted expanded magnets had blown the case apart. Since replacing the holder and making sure the magnets are above the water line, all is right with the world, and my corals, again.

I got the same email from TLF after a rusting nano-mag was found in my sps reef where a ton of healthy sps had just died.

Two little fishies is unable, without significant cost, to know what their magnets do and do not contain. They are buying an off the shelf magnet and are not taking the time to adequately design a product that does not expose it to the aquarium water. I suggested that they merely bulk pot the magnets in epoxy or otherwise, but I didnt get far.

I have read 10+ threads just like this now and it is frustrating.

How long can TLF hide behind the excuse of "well it coulda been anything". You know your product rusts. Design it to be permanently watertight or dont sell it.

My Tunze Osmolator Nano's float sensor bracket magnet is rusty but Tunze swears up and down that it's normal and won't hurt anything.

If they accept blame for their products, now it is in writing for a class action lawsuit. They are smarter then that to give anyone something in writing. Lol nice try tho.
