Have you toyed with the idea of using LEDS 3500k for the lighting?? Thinking of building an ats for my new set up
I have. Once I get the LED build done for my frag tank I may take on a build for the ATS. Less energy, less heat and no bulb change would be great(the bulbs on an ATS need to be changed out every three months for good performance).

I'm using 40w CFL "warm" color bulbs. I don't remember what the kelvin rating is. Yeah, every three months they need changing. It's amazing to see the side by side difference between a new bright bulb and a substantially dimmer three month old bulb. And if you think "well.. I can go four months", you'll see a pretty dramatic decrease in growth.

I think those are equivalent to 6500k. I'll try one side with 6500k and another with a lower Kelvin rating and watch the results. How big of a ats r u running for ur 180g tank??

My screen is 10 by 20 inches. A bit more than what I need, but I'd rather over build it than under build it.

Not sure what you mean, but anyone thinking of trying one should wait for the new designs to be posted in 5 weeks.
This would be an excellent forum to be a sponsor in and sell your product. I am sure we can start a group buy. Eh?????

Awesome thread! Nice setup OP!
I was planning on setting up my first refugium ever, this weekend. I'm planning on building a box to incorporate an ATS that will drain into the refugium. It's all been a bit overwhelming, but this thread has given me all the confidence to see it through!

algaescrubber.com is an excellent source for all things scrubber! I've spent days on that site, as it's full of much useful info and images. Many thanks santamonica!

I found some bulbs that may work for an ATS and save money, trouble, etc. and thought i'd share.

Any thoughts on these?

My new version of ats works like a charm...intead of cutting the pipe in the middle, I made a spray bar that spray the mesh. It is super easy to take out and clean. I split the overflow into two ways, one go down the drip tray and the other one to the ATS. I use a 18w (6x3w)led light which I bought for $45 off of ebay. No heat and don't have to replace the bulbs anytime soon.
